Gettysburg, Pa. - No. 6 Gettysburg College broke open a tied game by scoring six of the final seven goals to defeat Washington College 14-9 in a Centennial Conference women's lacrosse semifinal matchup on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Clark Field.
The Bullets (15-3) will take on No. 4 Franklin & Marshall College (16-2) on Sunday in the Centennial Conference championship game. The second-seeded Diplomats defeated third-seeded Haverford College in Saturday's other semifinal, 11-9.
The winner of Sunday's contest earns the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Junior
Katie Fullowan (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) and sophomore
Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) scored four goals apiece to lead Gettysburg's attack on the day.
Basso opened the scoring two minutes into Saturday's semifinal matchup, but back-to-back goals from Ellie Morrall put Washington (8-10) ahead, 2-1, at the 11:23 mark. The Bullets countered with the final five goals of the first quarter to hold a 6-2 advantage after 15 minutes of play.
Freshman
Emily Crane (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) extended Gettysburg's lead to 7-2 just over five minutes into the second stanza, but the Shorewomen scored three straight goals to pull within a pair at 7-5, with 6:57 remaining in the period.
A goal from sophomore
Jenna King (Millersville, Md./Severna Park) at the 3:50 mark halted Washington's run and took the Bullets into halftime with an 8-5 advantage.
Following the intermission, the Shorewomen used another 3-0 run to tie the game back up at 8-8. Morrall netted the first two goals of the spurt before Abby Laubach knotted the score with 3:42 remaining in the third quarter.
Fullowan netted an unassisted goal at the 2:08 mark to put Gettysburg back in front for good, 9-8, heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Fullowan gave the Bullets some breathing room with her fourth goal of the game three minutes into the final stanza and Gettysburg went on to outscore Washington 5-1 in the final frame, getting goals from five different players in the quarter.
King finished with three points in the contest, scoring two goals and adding an assist while Crane scored twice for the Bullets.
Sophomore
Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) added a goal and an assist, senior
Maddi Seibel (Newtown, Pa./Pennington School) scored a goal, and junior
Essie Pasternak (Short Hills, N.J./Blair Academy) contributed an assist in the win.
Defensively, senior
Nora Janzer (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) led all players with three caused turnovers and collected two groundballs while junior
Kaitlyn Bergen (Millstone, N.J./Allentown) picked up four groundballs and one caused turnover.
Fullowan added four groundballs and two caused turnovers to her four-goal performance.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Gill Cortese (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) made three saves in 30 minutes of action while junior
Shannon Twill (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills Regional) closed out the victory, playing the second half without being credited with a save.
Gettysburg held a 30-20 advantage in shots for the game align with a 19-12 lead in groundballs. The Bullets, who committed 16 turnovers, went 3-for-6 on free-position shots and were 15-for-21 on clears.
Morrall ended the day with a game-high five goals for Washington, which claimed a 14-13 edge in draw controls while going 3-for-4 on free-position shots and 14-for-17 on clears. The Shorewomen were forced into 20 turnovers by the Bullets in the loss.
Gettysburg has now advanced to the Centennial Conference championship game every season a postseason tournament has been held since 2000, a streak of 21 years that excludes the abbreviated 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Gettysburg and F&M have combined to win all 18 tournament championships since 2002. The Bullets lead the league with 12 titles since 2000 and have won the last two conference championship games, including a 16-6 win over the Diplomats in 2019, the last time the conference held a postseason tournament.
In this spring's regular-season meeting, the Bullets posted a 13-7 over the Diplomats at Clark Field.
Sunday's Centennial Conference championship between Gettysburg and F&M will start at 1:00 p.m. at Clark Field.
