THE REST OF THE STORY
• Both teams worked quickly in the first quarter, both scoring two goals in the first five minutes of action. York got on the board first, with a goal by Logan Ward on the Spartans' first possession. Gettysburg responded under a minute later as
Jordan Basso netted her first of seven to tie the game for the first time. A Gettysburg turnover allowed Ward to get the ball to Sydney Mentzer, who scored the second goal for York and gave them the one-goal advantage again. However, a yellow card gave Gettysburg a man-up opportunity, and
Regan Rightmire (Downington, Pa./Downingtown STEM Academy) found Basso for her second of the game to make it 2-all. A Gettysburg yellow card followed shortly after, and the Spartans converted on the man-up to regain their lead. Two caused turnovers by the Gettysburg defense created another opportunity for the Bullets, and the ball landed in the stick of
Caroline Sullivan for her first of the game, tying the score once again at 3-all. With just under four minutes left in the first quarter, a
Gabi Connor (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield Memorial) goal gave the Bullets' their first lead of the game, and two saves by Gettysburg goalie
Gillian Cortese (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) maintained the lead going into the second period.
• Neither team found the net in the first five minutes of the second period, as both teams turned the ball over several times. The Gettysburg defense worked to keep York scoreless throughout the rest of the quarter, with Cortese making a few key saves in cage. With 9:15 showing in the second, a Basso shot went high, and she tried again to make it a 5-3 Gettysburg lead. Just over 45 seconds later,
Maddie Passarello (West Chester, Pa./Unionville) got the ball to Basso again, and she made it a three-goal advantage, forcing a York timeout. Out of the break, the Spartans won the draw, but Sullivan forced a turnover and a foul was called on the Spartans to give
Kelly O'Connor a free-position opportunity, which she netted to make it a four-goal lead. Basso found the last goal of the quarter with 1:56 left to play, creating an 8-3 score going into halftime.
• In the first three minutes of the third quarter,
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) caused a turnover and drove to cage for a six-goal lead. A Gettysburg foul yielded a York free position goal, their first since 9:33 in the first period, to close within five goals. However,
Emily Crane (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) scored her first of two on the day to bring the lead back to six, with 8:12 left in the third quarter. York started to mount a comeback late in the period, scoring three goals in less than two minutes to cut the deficit back to 10-7 with 3:57 showing. Gettysburg took a timeout, then came out and scored three in a row of their own. The Bullets won three draw controls, and O'Connor, Basso, and Crane found the net in the stretch, leading the team back to a six-goal lead heading into the final quarter.
• Two York fouls allowed Sullivan to dish to Daly, who netted her second of the game in the first minute of the final quarter.
Lily Macatee won the draw control, and again two York fouls enabled a Gettysburg goal, this time by Sullivan for her second of the day. York tried two shots that both went wide, before being awarded a free position attempt and cashing in to make it a 15-8 game. Anya Litofsky scored again for the Spartans with 11:25 left to play, drawing them within six once more. However, the Bullets held York off, scoring the final four goals of the game within the final ten minutes of play. Sullivan, O'Connor, Basso, and Passarello found the net in the waning minutes, with Passarello scoring her first career goal. The Gettysburg defense also worked to hold York off, forcing three failed clears and denying them the opportunity to create a comeback, as the Bullets ran away with the 19-9 win.
