THE SKINNY STORY
Five straight Gettysburg goals opened up a five-goal second-quarter lead. Washington and Lee, which rallied to defeat the Bullets on their home turf in March, three times pulled to within two but Gettysburg returned the favor when it mattered most, holding off the home team this time 11-8 in the third round of the NCAA Div. III women's lacrosse tournament.
THE LEADERS
•
Julia Daly (McLean, Va./Langley) scored a career-high six goals, including four of the first five for the Bullets to lead the attack.
•
Gillian Cortese (Mount Laurel, N.J./Lenape) backstopped the defense with nine saves, including four huge fourth-quarter stops.
FOR THE FOES
• Allie Schwab led the Generals with two goals and one assist.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• After being held out of the scoring column in the second-round game last weekend,
Julia Daly staked Gettysburg to a 2-0 lead with a pair of unassisted goals in the opening 3:38. Washington and Lee countered with the next two, however. Shannon Timoney went coast-to-coast to get the hosts on the board with 9:03 to play before Claire Horner tied the game with a free-position tally at the 7:22 mark. Just 1:07 later,
Caroline Sullivan (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) found a cutting
Emily Crane (Upper Montclair, N.J./Montclair) in front to put the Bullets back in front by one. Daly added a third in the first quarter to stretch the advantage to 4-2 with 17 ticks remaining.
• Daly added her fourth of the day on another solo move to push the lead to 5-2 with 11:39 to play in the second quarter. Just 1:19 later, the rookie made it five of the first six for her team and forced a timeout by the Generals – this time off Sullivan's second helper of the afternoon.
Jordan Basso (Rye, N.Y./Rye) made her move off the right wing and found the back of the net for an advantage goal with 8:20 remaining for a 7-2 lead. Timoney snapped a 15-plus minute scoring drought with a free-position tally 62 seconds later, trimming the deficit back to four.
• Hanna Bishop got the first goal of the second half, finishing a Allie Schwab assist with 12:33 to play in the third quarter, making it a 7-4 game. Schwab cut the margin to two nearly a minute and a half later. Gettysburg finally broke through in the quarter when
Kelly O'Connor (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) got creative to find the back of the net off a pass from
Katie Fullowan (Lebanon, N.J./North Hunterdon) with 37.9 seconds in the period. Fullowan then did the work herself to add a second in the waning seconds, pushing the lead back to four at 9-5 with 4.4 ticks remaining.
• Ginny Taylor finished a quick pass from Emma Marsh, making it a 9-6 contest with 9:38 showing before Horner got one past the keeper on the doorstep to close the deficit to two 57 seconds later. Fullowan responded with a tough-angle goal with 6:47 on the clock. Schwab once again made it a two-goal game, finishing in front from Jenny Lisovicz with 2:58 to play. Daly wrapped around the cage from behind and finished stick side to make it a three-goal lead once again with 1:48 remaining.
THE INSIDE STORY
• Both teams took 23 shots on the day while Washington and Lee had a slight 12-10 edge in draw controls.
•
Katie Fullowan finished with two goals and an assist.
