THE SKINNY STORY
Dickinson scored 21 straight points in the second quarter to open up a 24-6 halftime lead then had to stave off a comeback attempt from Gettysburg in the second half and ultimately coming away with a 41-19 win.
THE LEADERS
•
RJ Weiss (Oradell, N.J./River Dell) recorded his third double-digit tackle game of the season for the Bullets, leading the defense with 12 stops.
•
Gabriel Diaz (Orlando, Fla./Winter Park) led the offense with seven catches for 80 yards.
FOR THE FOES
• Dane Sorensen led the Red Devils with 24 carries for 180 yards and three touchdowns. As a team, Dickinson ran for 293 yards on 45 carries.
THE REST OF THE STORY
• The Red Devils needed just six plays to move the ball 68 yards inside the Gettysburg 10. However, the Gettysburg defense stiffened and Dickinson netted zero yards on the next three plays before settling for a Hudson Reese 24-yard field goal and 3-0 lead with 9:31 on the clock. After a trade of punts,
Jayden Lee (Montclair, N.J./Montclair) returned a punt 21 yards to set up his offense at the Dickinson 46. A 24-yard connection from
Sean Clark (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) and
Gabriel Diaz moved the ball to the 22. Three plays later, the Bullets also had to settle for a field goal – a 35-yarder from
Isaac Parks-Gill (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County) to tie the game with 4:01 showing.
• On its next possession, Gettysburg moved the ball 60 yards in 10 plays but the drive stalled inside the 10 and Parks-Gill hit his second field goal of the day, converting from 31 for a 6-3 edge. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Sorensen kicked a run outside and raced 65 yards down his own sideline for the day's first touchdown and a 10-6 lead with 11:03 showing. A Jake Williams one-yard dive paid off an 84-yard drive on the next Red Devil drive to stretch the lead to 17-6 with 4:50 on the clock. Ben Klassen found Kevin Schmidt for a 10-yard score to push the lead to 24-6 with 10 seconds remaining in the half.
• Gettysburg had the answer out of the break, however. A 29-yard pass play to
Nick Thomas (Rumson, N.J./Rumson-Fair Haven Regional) and 23-yard Diaz catch-and-run for a touchdown drew the hosts with 24-12 with 11:57 showing. The Bullets' two-point attempt failed to keep it a 12-point game. The two quarterbacks then traded interceptions, ultimately setting up the Red Devils at the Gettysburg 19. The offense generated just four yards in three plays and Reese just got a 32-yard field goal over the crossbar for a 27-12 lead with 4:41 remaining.
• On the first play of the fourth quarter, facing fourth-and-goal from the Dickinson 9, Gettysburg lined up for a field goal but then called a timeout and sent the offense back on the field. Clark found
Edison Case (Reading, Pa./Wilson) in the back of the end zone to make it 27-19. The Bullets then recovered an onside kick but another interception gave the Red Devils the ball at their own 40. An 11-play drive that featured 11 runs ate 6 minutes, 44 seconds off the clock and Sorensen took a pitch back and found the right corner of the end zone to make it 34-19 with 6:22 to play. Another nine-play march that lasted nearly five minutes ended with Sorensen's third score with 36 seconds left.
