GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Breana Sumpter has been named the first head coach of women's flag football at Gettysburg College, announced by Executive Director of Athletics and Recreation Troy Dell on Friday.

The College announced the addition of women's flag football among three new sports in March. The program, which joined the NCAA Emerging Sports program in January and is set to be voted on as a championship sport this coming January, will begin as the Bullets' 27th varsity athletic program during the 2027-28 academic year.

Sumpter comes to Gettysburg after starting the LaGrange program and serving as its head coach since the summer of 2024.

"We are glad to have Breana join us to start our flag football program," Dell said. "Her experiences starting the program at LaGrange and recruiting knowledge will be extremely valuable as we build the team."

Sumpter launched the program, recruiting the initial two classes for the Panthers. The only coach on staff, she implemented offensive and defensive systems as well as coordinating athlete development and established the team culture.

She guided LaGrange through its first season on competition this past spring, leading the Panthers to a victory on their first day of competition. Over her time at LaGrange, she established a robust recruiting network throughout the southeast.

Prior to her first collegiate coaching experience, Sumpter served as the head flag football coach at Benjamin E. Mays High School with in the Atlanta Public Schools system from 2022-24. She led the team to consecutive regional playoff appearances. She coached four first-team and two second-team all-area selections as well as the 2023 Player of the Year. She was named regional coach of the year in 2022 and was twice the Coca-Cola Female Coach of the Year.

She also served as an assistant track and field coach, coaching the shot put and discus. During her three seasons on staff as throws coach, her athletes earned more than 15 medals, including the 2023 state title in the shot put.

Sumpter served as a Spanish teacher in the Atlanta Public School system while coaching at the high school level. She was also part of the 2025 and 2026 NCAA Women Coaches Academy.

Sumpter earned a bachelor of science in sociology and Spanish from Shippensburg in 2015.

Sumpter will spend the next year recruiting and preparing for the launch of the first season of intercollegiate competition in 2027-28.
