Gettysburg College Student Health Insurance Information
There is no financial responsibility for intercollegiate athletes seeking an evaluation or treatment of an injury/illness by an athletic trainer or team physician while being seen in the athletic training room. If a physician or athletic trainer recommends additional medical services, which includes but not limited to; additional testing (lab work, x-rays, MRI etc.), an in-office visit, physical therapy referral or an injury specific brace; the cost of such services is the responsibility of you and/or your primary insurance company.
Each Gettysburg College student-athlete must be covered by a current and valid health insurance policy with a minimum of $5,000 in coverage for each incident, either through his/her parents/guardian, or purchased through Gettysburg College. If an athlete’s personal medical insurance fails to provide that initial $5,000 of medical coverage, the athlete is deemed to be self-insured and must pay these expenses out-of-pocket. In the case of any accident or injury, the athlete’s insurance is always the primary insurance.
The College maintains an Intercollegiate Sports Policy (ICS) for cases of accident or injury that occur while a student is involved in intercollegiate athletics, and will cover otherwise eligible injuries up to a maximum of $90,000. This policy has a $5,000 deductible and will not respond at least until the athlete’s personal medical insurance has responded to the first $5,000 of medical expense. Because the athlete’s insurance is always the primary coverage, there may be occasions when the athlete’s personal insurance coverage will be responsible for more than the initial $5,000 in expenses, but only to the extent benefits are available above $5,000.
In the case of accident or injury, a member of the athletic training staff along with the injured athlete must complete and submit an insurance claim within 90 days of the accident or injury. The benefit period of this policy is two years from the date of the injury, which means the injured athlete has two years to seek treatment. After that, the benefit period is exhausted. The College also participates in the NCAA catastrophic medical insurance program that may provide up to $20,000,000 in additional coverage.
