George Petrie enters his 24th season as the Gettysburg College head men’s golf coach in 2017-18.
After serving as an assistant coach from 1990-92 and as co-head coach from 1993-2001, he was elevated to head coach prior to the 2001-02 campaign and promptly led the Bullets to their first Centennial Conference (CC) championship in seven years. Petrie is also Gettysburg’s head men’s basketball coach and that program's all-time wins leader.
In 2016-17, Petrie led Bullets to another solid season, as they finished among the top-three on five occasions, including three runner-up performances. He also helped Danny Harcourt ’19 and Dane Sethre-Hofstad ’19 earn a spot on the NCAA Division III PING All-Mid-Atlantic Region team for the second year in a row.
One year earlier, Petrie guided the Bullets to a second-place finish at the Centennial Conference championship. It was a banner season for the Orange and Blue, which shaved nearly 17 strokes off the previous campaign’s scoring average. The team also notched the lowest scoring round in program history with a 287 at the Penn State Harrisburg Invitational.
During his tenure at the helm of the men’s golf program, Petrie has directed the Bullets to three CC team championships (1994, 1995, 2002) and four runner-up finishes (2001, 2004, 2011, 2016). He has coached six individual champions, 26 all-conference performers, and one All-American.
As co-head coach in 1994, Petrie led the Bullets to the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship. Guillermo Nakada ’95 was selected to the All-America team after finishing 18th overall.
On the hardwood, Petrie has guided the Bullets to three CC championships and all five of the program’s NCAA tournament appearances. In 2008-09, Petrie guided Gettysburg to its third Centennial Conference title in program history. He has accumulated a career record of 389-330 in 28 years as the Bullets’ basketball coach.
Prior to joining Gettysburg’s coaching staff, he served for 14 years as an assistant men’s basketball coach under Charlie Woollum at Bucknell University.
A native of Springfield, Pa., Petrie is a 1972 graduate of Lebanon Valley College, where he is a member of the school's Hall of Fame.
