Joanna Hayes enters her second season as an assistant track & field coach at Gettysburg College in 2012-13 and serves as the team’s jumps coach.
In 2011-12, Hayes helped coach Alexandra Van Tuyl '12, who won her third-straight Centennial Conference title in the heptathlon while setting the school record with 4,080 points. Van Tuyl also finished third at the outdoor conference meet in the long jump. In addition, Hayes coached Edward Makinde '15, who broke into the school's all-time top-10 in both the indoor triple jump (No. 5) and the outdoor triple jump (No. 7).
Prior to arriving at Gettysburg, Hayes spent a two-year coaching stint at Dickinson College, where she was an assistant for the cross country and track & field programs. In 2009-10, she helped coached the men’s program to the Centennial Conference “triple crown,” – conference titles in cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field. In addition, she helped the Red Devil men’s cross country team finish fifth at the 2010 NCAA Division III Championships, and the men’s track & field team also won the Centennial Conference outdoor title in 2011. Individually, she helped coach Kent Pecora, the 2011 NCAA Division III champion in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as well as Nick Karwoski, the 2010 NCAA runner-up in the steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run.

As an undergraduate, Hayes was a standout distance runner at Kutztown University. In cross country, she was a four-time all-conference and four-time all-region selection for the Golden Bears and made four appearances at the NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships. On the track, Hayes helped set outdoor school records in the distance medley relay, the 4x800-meter relay, the mile, and the 1,000-meter run. A three-time Academic All-American, she graduated in 2009 with a degree in leisure and sports studies.
In 2010, Hayes gained a USATF Level 1 coaching certification.
