John Grim

Grim enters his fourth season as a men’s and women’s assistant track and field coach at Gettysburg in 2024-25.

In his first season working with the Bullet throwers, he helped guide Holly Ferrara to a program record and All-America performance in the javelin. She placed fourth at the NCAA championship. Ferrara returned to the national championship over the next two seasons and made it three straight All-America showings under Grim's leadership.

Grim arrived at Gettysburg with an exceptional wealth of knowledge in the coaching world with 40-plus years of experience, ranging from the high school ranks to the college level.

At Linganore High School in Frederick, Md., Grim produced 14 total state team championships, 24 regional crowns, and 17 county titles. He was named Fredrick County Girls Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year nine times and earned the honor seven times during the outdoor season and three times in cross country. Grim was inducted into the Frederick Country Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

In college, his coaching stops included Hagerstown Community College, Messiah University, and Hood College, where he was a head coach for two years.

Grim served as the head coach in the Pangea USA-Russia Track & Field competition and took two high school teams to Russia.  

Grim was a four-year member of the football team at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he was named All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, All-ECAC, and a member of IUP’s All-Decade team.  

A native of New Castle, Pa., Grim graduated in 1973 with a bachelor’s of science degree at IUP and later earned his master’s in sports science at Slippery Rocky University.
