Bremer, Milliman help Bullets roll past Haverford, 24-4

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Ric Bremer (Ridgefield, CT/John Jay [NY]) and Pete Milliman (Rochester, NY/Brighton) combined for seven goals and 13 points as second-ranked Gettysburg scored the game's first 19 goals en route to a 24-4 victory over Haverford in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Bremer netted four goals for the second straight game and tied a career high with seven points to move into fifth place on the program's career goal-scoring list (123). With the win, the Bullets (8-1, 3-0 CC) improved to 18-0 all-time against the Fords (1-8, 0-3 CC) and claimed their 31st consecutive regular-season CC victory.

Milliman netted his fourth hat trick of the season and also dished out three assists in the win. Fourteen other Bullets found the net on the day as Gettysburg topped the 20-goal mark for the eighth time in its last nine meetings with Haverford.

Tim McGinnis (Ellicott City, MD/Loyola-Blakefield) needed to make only two saves to blank the Fords in his 39 minutes of work.

Mike Fischette score three times for Haverford while defenseman Joe Caulfield netted an unusual goal on a 70-yard heave in the game's final minutes.

Despite the big numbers put up by Bremer and Milliman, it was defensive midfielders Vinny Merlino (Rye, NY/Rye) and Jay Mayes (Pikesville, MD/McDonogh) who got the ball rolling. With the Bullets breaking in transition, Mayes set up Merlino's first goal of the season for a 1-0 lead with 9:14 left in the opening quarter.

Rich Sharp (Acton, MA/Acton-Boxborough Reg.) finished a solo-run at 7:06 and Bremer shoveled home his first goal of the game off a Jake Van Nostrand (Baldwin, NY/Baldwin) assist to make it 3-0.

Unassisted goals from Milliman and Sharp in the final 18.6 seconds of the first quarter pushed the lead to 5-0. Milliman and Sean McTernan (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Hendrick Hudson) each scored twice and dished out one assist to fuel a 7-0 second quarter that gave the Bullets a 12-0 lead at the break.

Bremer scored twice in the opening 1:22 of the third quarter and Gettysburg found the net seven more times before Fischette put the Fords on the scoreboard with 4:23 left in the period.

The Bullets' 24-goal output was their highest of the season and the program's best since a 24-5 win over Haverford on Apr. 4, 2001.

McTernan finished with two goals and one assist, as did sophomore Bret McConnaughhay (Annapolis, MD/Annapolis) to post a career-high three points.

Gettysburg outshot the Fords 61-14 on the day and held a 59-35 edge in ground balls. The Bullets also killed all six man-down situations.

Gettysburg returns to action on Wednesday, Apr. 10 at home against nationally ranked Western Maryland. Game time is 4 p.m.
