WINCHESTER, Va.  – The Gettysburg College baseball team rallied late but was unable to recover from a 6-0 deficit, and the Bullets lost 6-4 at Shenandoah University in a non-conference outing Friday afternoon.

Taylor DuFrene blanked the Bullets (5-6) over the first six innings before Gettysburg broke through with a three-run seventh. With one out, freshman Chris Simard (Lexington, Mass./Belmont Hill) drove in a run with a single before freshman pinch-hitter Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) drew a bases-loaded walk against reliever Gage Levac. Sophomore Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) capped the inning with a RBI-fielder's choice.

Simard worked a bases-loaded walk in the eighth to cut the gap to 6-4. However, Hornet reliever Josh Simmons got out of the jam with a pop-up and a groundout. In the ninth, Gettysburg had the tying run at bat when junior Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) ripped a two-out single, but Simmons struck out his third batter of the inning to end the game.

DuFrene (3-1) earned the win, throwing 6 1/3 while striking out six, walking two, and yielding seven hits. Simons picked up the save, allowing only a hit over 1 2/3.

Sophomore Derek Zaleski (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) suffered the loss on the hill for Gettysburg. Zaleski (2-1) the defending Centennial Conference Pitcher of the Week, surrendered six runs on nine hits over six innings.

Simard and senior Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) led the Bullets at the plate with two hits apiece while Simard had two RBIs.

Shenandoah (9-8) scored singles runs in the third through the fifth innings to build a 3-0 lead, with Greg Van Sickler smacking a leadoff home run in the fourth. Christian Frey capped a three-run, four-hit Hornet sixth with another solo shot.

Sophomore John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) threw two perfect innings, striking out two, to keep it close for the Bullets.

Gettysburg stays in Virginia to take on Averett on Saturday in a non-conference doubleheader starting at noon.
