GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The high octane attack of the Gettysburg College women's lacrosse team was running on all cylinders on Saturday at Clark Field as the third-ranked Bullets dominated the action from start to finish in a 21-3 shellacking of Centennial Conference foe Swarthmore College.
Gettysburg (9-0, 3-0 CC), which came into Saturday's contest leading NCAA Division III in total points, remained unbeaten this spring thanks to an offensive attack that recorded 14 assists on 21 goals. The Bullets also dominated play off the draw with 18 wins in 26 chances, including winning 12-of-14 in the opening stanza.
Senior
Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) led the offensive attack with seven points coming on three goals and a four assists. Half of her helpers went to sophomore
Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School), who posted a game-high four goals to go with three ground balls and a Bullet season-high eight draw controls – all in the first half.
Stahl and Ceglarski got things off and running with back-to-back free position goals just 2:29 into the game. Senior
Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) and sophomore
Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) tacked on unassisted goals and Giffuni found senior
Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) at 22:34 to cap a 5-0 start.
After Swarthmore's leading scorer Amy Vachel put home a goal on a fast break, the Bullets blew the game wide open with a 7-0 run, including three goals by Stahl and two goals and two assists by Ceglarski. The Garnet added another goal at 4:30 to set the margin at 12-2 at the end of the first half.
The two teams exchanged goals at the start of the second half, but the hosts welcomed a new Garnet goalie by finishing the game on an 8-0 run. Seniors
Cristi Farrell (Broomall, Pa./Academy of Notre Dame) and
Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) led the charge with a pair of goals apiece.
Giffuni, Moore, and Crane all ended the day with four points coming on two goals and two assists. Browning posted a hat trick, while sophomore
Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) rounded out Gettysburg's starting attack with a pair of assists.
Sophomore
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) and freshman
Mary Spicer (Florar Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) each added one goal for the hosts, the latter marking her first collegiate goal, while freshman
Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) produced two points on a goal and an assist.
Defensively, sophomore
Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made six saves in the first 47:33 for Gettysburg. Freshman
Laura McIntyre (Glenmoore, Pa./Coatesville) sealed the win with three stops without allowing a goal in the final 12:27. Senior
Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) notched a game-high three caused turnovers and scooped up three ground balls.
Vachal led the Swarthmore attack with a pair of goals on nine shots. Alex Gilbert-Bono notched one goal and caused a pair of turnovers, while Susannah Blair made eight saves in the goal.
Gettysburg will square off with another nationally-ranked foe in its next contest on Thursday, March 27. The Bullets will entertain fourth-ranked Middlebury College at Clark Field beginning at 4 p.m. The Panthers are the only team to beat Gettysburg at Clark Field in the last three seasons after pulling out a 12-11 overtime decision in 2007.
