WESTMINSTER, Md. – With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, McDaniel College scored two runs on four straight singles and the host Green Terror rallied to defeat Gettysburg 3-2 in a Centennial Conference baseball game Wednesday afternoon at Preston Field.
The Bullets (12-12, 4-1 CC), who suffered their first Centennial Conference loss of the season and had their four-game winning streak snapped, had taken a 2-1 lead after scoring a pair of runs in the top of the eighth but could not hold off the Green Terror (4-13, 1-4 CC) in the bottom half.
Shawn Yohe held the Bullets to four hits and no earned runs over 7 1/3 innings while receiving a no-decision. Ryan Graves (1-0) threw 2/3 of an inning in relief to earn the win for McDaniel before giving way Tyler Persun in the ninth, who picked up the save despite yielding a pair of singles.
Sophomore Derek Zaleski (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) started and suffered the loss for Gettysburg. Zaleski (3-3) scattered six hits and struck out two over the opening 7 2/3 before running into trouble. Russell Coover and Zach Croft stroke back-to-back singles, and that's when freshman Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) was called out of the bullpen. But Matthew Pace kept the rally alive, tying the game with a single to left before Zach Croft drove in the go-ahead run with a single through the left side.
In the ninth, Gettysburg put runners on the corners with one out when senior Dave Olson (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) and junior Scott Vladyka (Stanhope, N.J./Lenape Valley Regional) ripped back-to-back singles. However, Persun got out of it with a strikeout and a groundout.
Olson led the Bullets at the plate, going 2-for-4. Croft was 3-for-4 for the Green Terror while Longo went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs.
Longo put McDaniel up 1-0 with an RBI-single in the fourth. But after being stymied but Yohe through the first seven innings, Gettysburg got on the board with a two-run eighth. Senior Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) got on with a one-out single before freshman Chris Simard (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) drew a walk. Graves got a flyout one batter later, but McGee and Simard scored when a Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) fly ball was misplayed. Graves prevented further damage, however, getting a strikeout to end the inning.
The two teams conclude their two-game season series on Friday, playing another nine-inning game at Gettysburg starting at 3:30 p.m.
