RADNOR, Pa. – Cabrini College proved it wasn't going to be a walk-over in its non-conference contest against No. 4 Gettysburg College on Wednesday, scoring each of the first five goals of the game. The Bullets recovered, however, scoring 20 of the next 24 goals to pull out a 20-11 victory in its final contest before the Centennial Conference Tournament.
Cabrini (11-4), the front-runners in the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference this spring, came out with five consecutive goals in the opening 10:50, including three by Erin Nollen in a span of 1:03, to equal its scoring total from last season's 20-5 loss to the Orange & Blue. Gettysburg (16-2) stopped the run with an unassisted goal by
Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) at 17:41 before another Cavalier goal pushed the deficit back to five with 17:07 remaining in the opening period.
Unfortunately for the hosts, the Bullet offense hit its stride with six goals coming from five different players over the final 15:28 of the half. Sophomore
Hollis Stahl (Highstown, N.J./Peddie School)accounted for two goals, while senior
Katie Ceglarski (Darien, Conn./Darien) dished out three assists. Cabrini added a goal in the final minute to knot the game at 7-7 at the break.
Gettysburg came out with three goals to start the second half to build its lead to 10-7. The Cavaliers pulled to 10-8 on a score by Amanda Alexandrowiz at 26:15 before the visitors ripped off an eight-goal scoring run to secure a 10-goal lead (18-8) with under 10 minutes left to play. Stahl and Crane each netted a pair of goals during the run. Senior
Megan Moore (Chestertown, Md./Gunston Day School) and Crane closed the scoring for Gettysburg with back-to-back goals to take the advantage to 20-9 with just over six minutes to play.
Crane finished with a team-high and career-high five goals and tied Moore (four goals, two assists) for team honors with six total points. Stahl added five goals, while
Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) tallied a pair of scores. Seniors
Krissy Browning (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) and
Jamie Giffuni (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) each added a pair of goals with the former tacking on an assist. Despite being held off the scoreboard for the first time this spring, Ceglarski came up with a career-high tying five assists.
Gettysburg tallied 15 caused turnovers in the affair led by senior
Callie Gates (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) with four. Gates also added a team-high four ground balls, while Browning, Emala, and junior
Sara Tolner (Pasadena, Md./Severn School) posted a pair of caused turnovers. The Bullets also won the battle off the draw with 19 draw controls, led by Stahl and Ceglarski with six and four, respectively.
Sophomore goalie
Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made nine saves for the Bullets en route to her 12th win this season.
Nollen led Cabrini with four goals, while Alexandrowiz added three goals, one assist, and three draw controls. Katelyn Penrose contributed a pair of goals and a pair of assists. Kate Schmid played all 60 in between the pipes for the Cavaliers and finished with 11 saves.
Gettysburg will face No. 12 Dickinson College (11-4, 7-2 CC) in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament hosted by Franklin & Marshall College on Saturday, April 26, at 3:30 p.m. Top seed Franklin & Marshall (14-1, 9-0 CC) will face McDaniel College (10-6, 5-4 CC) in Saturday's other semifinal at 1 p.m. The Green Terror defeated Muhlenberg College 22-16 in the first round of the tournament on Wednesday. Saturday's winners will face each other for the conference championship and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament on Sunday, April 27, at 1 p.m.
