COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Ursinus College scored seven unanswered runs over the final three innings in the second game and posted a 7-6 walk-off victory as the host Bears swept a Centennial Conference doubleheader from Gettysburg Saturday afternoon in the conference finale for both teams.

Ursinus captured the first game 6-4. The Bears (18-14, 10-8 CC) finished in fifth place in the conference standings, one game behind Muhlenberg for the fourth and final playoff spot. Gettysburg (16-23, 8-10 CC) finished sixth.

Sophomore Kevin Langhauser (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) led the Bullets at the plate, going 6-for-9 over the twinbill while freshman Cam Riera (Medway, Mass./Medway) and sophomore Mike Backus (Piscataway, N.J./Immaculata) each went 4-for-8. Freshman Chris Simard (Lexington, Mass./Belmont Hill) finished 3-for-6 with three runs and three walks.

It was a back-and-forth affair in the opener, with neither team leading by more than two runs. The Bullets plated an unearned run against Ursinus starter Zeb Engle in the top of the first, with senior Mike Donohue (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) driving in a run on a groundout. But Ursinus answered with three runs on one hit, a pair of hit batsmen, and a wild pitch in the bottom of the inning. After a leadoff single, Gettysburg starter Will Kleva (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) plunked back-to-back hitters to load the bases. A wild pitch followed by a groundout scored the Bears' first two runs before a sacrifice fly made it 3-1.

Gettysburg tied it up with a two-run third. Backus led off with a single before scoring on a Langhauser double two batters later. Another Ursinus error allowed Langhauser to score, making it 3-3.

The Bears went back in front in third, when they scored twice on three hits, one error, and a walk. However, as he has done several times throughout the season, freshman Matt Karis (Southborough, Mass./Noble & Greenough School) came on in relief to limit the damage. Karis entered the game with one out and the bases loaded before getting the Bullets out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout.

The Bullets pulled to within 5-4 in the fourth, when Simard ripped a one-out single, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on a Backus single. But that would turn out to be Gettysburg's final run, as Engle held the Orange & Blue to one hit over the final three innings. Ursinus tacked on an insurance run in the sixth.

Backus and Langhauser each went 2-for-4 in the opener while Simard scored a pair of runs. Leadoff hitter Ben Lockman led the Bears with a 3-for-4 game.

Kleva (4-3) was charged with the loss, yielding five runs (three earned) on four hits and three hit batsmen. Karis allowed only one run on three hits while striking out two over 3 2/3 innings.

Engle (5-2) worked a complete-game eight-hitter, striking out 10 while surrendering only one earned run.

Gettysburg led 6-0 in the nightcap before Ursinus' rally. The Bullets took a 3-0 lead on three hits and two walks in the third, when Backus ripped a bases-loaded, two-run single before a Langhauser fielder's choice drove in another run.

Riera knocked in a run with a single in the fourth, making it 4-0, before the Bullets added single runs in the sixth and seventh, all against Bear starter Ryan Smith. Senior Sean McGee (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) led off the sixth with a single and went on to score on a wild pitch. Then in the seventh, Langhauser led off with a single and scored on a McGee one-bagger.

In the meantime, Gettysburg starter Derek Zaleski (Haddonfield, N.J./Haddonfield) was throwing an outstanding game, shutting out the Bears on five hits over the first six innings. He ran into trouble in the seventh, yielding three runs on three hits and a hit batsman, but left the game with the Bullets leading 6-3.

Sophomore Michael Sweeney (Bethesda, Md./St. Anselm's Abbey School) came on in the eighth and struck out the first batter he faced before giving up three straight singles, the last of which made it 6-4. Sophomore John Antrim-Cashin (Dobbs Ferry, N.Y./Fordham Prep) hit a batter to load the bases, and junior Jeff McAndrew (Medford, N.J./Shawnee) was promptly summoned out of the pen. The Bears pushed across a pair of runs on a fielder's choice and a single before McAndrews got a fly-out to get out of it with the game tied 6-6.

In the bottom of the ninth, leadoff hitter Scott Young was hit with a pitch – Ursinus' fifth hit batsman of the game and the eighth of the afternoon. Brendan Evans then sacrificed him to second before Brad Wickersham was intentionally walked. Mike Ziemak followed up with a single to left, scoring pinch-runner Stephen Benavage from second with the game-winning run.

Langhauser finished 4-for-5 in the second game while Riera was 3-for-5. Backus and McGee each had a pair of hits while Backus also drove in two runs.

Smith (2-3) also went the distance for the Bears. He gave up 14 hits, although all were singles, and walked five. He allowed Ursinus to rally, inducing in an inning-ending double play in the seventh while retiring seven of his final eight batters.

McAndrews (0-1) suffered the loss for Gettysburg.

The Bullets close out their season on Monday, when they visit Juniata College for a non-conference game starting at 4 p.m.
