Box Score

BALTIMORE – Four-time defending Centennial Conference champion Johns Hopkins University continued its domination of conference opposition with a 4-1 victory over visiting Gettysburg College Saturday afternoon at Homewood Field. Senior Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) provided the offense for the Bullets with her second goal of 2009.

Johns Hopkins (10-2, 5-0 CC), ranked ninth in the latest NSCAA/adidas national poll, extended its unbeaten streak in conference play to 22 matches (21-0-1) by recording a trio of goals in the opening 12:11. Sarah Roeder put in the first at 1:31, followed by back-to-back scores off the foot of Jessica Hnatiuk at 3:43 and 12:11.

Gettysburg (6-4-1, 2-2-1 CC) made its first offensive moves after the 20-minute mark, including a shot by freshman Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) that was turned away by Blue Jay goalie Karen Guszkowski at 24:19. Just 1:19 later, Gaston sliced the deficit to 3-1 with a shot from 10 yards out that scooted under Guszkowski.

Johns Hopkins' defensive unit stepped up and held Gettysburg without another shot attempt until a high shot by Gaston two minutes into the second half. The Bullets took two more stabs at the goal with the last attempt by sophomore Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) saved by second-half starting goalie Kristen Redsun.

The hosts added to their advantage in the 84th minute when Caitlin Moore lifted a ball over Gettysburg goalie Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) for her first goal of the season.

Johns Hopkins held an 18-6 lead on shot attempts and took four of five corner kicks in the match.

Gaston, Johnson, and Attanasio each took two shots for Gettysburg, while Rivera made six saves in between the pipes.

Gettysburg will visit York (Pa.) College for a non-conference contest on Thursday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m.
