YORK, Pa. – Exactly one year ago, York (Pa.) College walked off Clark Field with an overtime victory after netting the golden goal in the 95th minute. On Thursday, Gettysburg returned the favor on the Spartans' home turf as senior
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) converted a penalty kick in the 98th minute to hand the Bullets a 1-0 non-conference victory.
Gettysburg (7-4-1) and York (11-3-1), rated sixth in the Atlantic South Region and leading the Capital Athletic Conference, have now played to overtime three-consecutive seasons with a scoreless draw in 2007 and 1-0 overtime decisions in each of the last two meetings. The Bullets took up the offensive attack early on Thursday with a pair of shots by junior
Sarah Yeager (Westport, Conn.Staples) and freshman
Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) that were wide of the mark.
All three of the Spartans' first-half shots were on goal, but they were all turned away by Gettysburg sophomore
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River), including a shot by Steph Mergler in the 38th minute.
York narrowly missed putting a tally on the board just past the midway point of the final stanza. Awarded a corner kick, the Spartans managed a header to the corner of the goal, but the shot was sent away by a Gettysburg defender. The hosts put another attempt on goal just seconds later, but that attempt was stopped cold by Rivera as part of her match-high six saves.
In the final 10 minutes of regulation, each team fired shots on target. Sophomore
Sara Montague's (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) attempt was saved by Sarah Spanarkel in the 83rd minute, while Rivera made a leaping save on a blast by Stephanie Rice just 20 seconds later.
Gettysburg wasted little time getting into motion in the extra session, forcing a pair of early corner kicks. The Bullets made a move to the goal with under three minutes left in the first overtime period with the end result of Gaston getting taken down inside the box. The senior made good on her first career penalty kick attempt, netting her third goal of the season and her third career game-winner.
York held a slight advantage in shots at 11-9 and both teams took four corner kicks.
Montague finished with four shots and Attanasio tallied a pair of attempts. Rivera earned the decision and her sixth shutout of 2009.
Kat Sipes had three shots for York with Rice, Mergler, and Carly Bock each adding two.
The Bullets return home for a Centennial Conference contest against Washington (Md.) College on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. as part of Gettysburg's Homecoming Weekend.
