Latta’s Game-Winner Powers Field Hockey, 1-0

Molly Latta's third career game-winning goal came against Washington.

Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) scored with 5:46 left in the game, and No. 15 Gettysburg nipped Washington (Md.) College 1-0 in a Centennial Conference field hockey match-up at a cold and wet Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.

Latta dribbled into the right side of the circle and ripped a shot that was deflected by senior goalie Elena Nicholoff. However, the shot was hard enough to roll past Nicholoff and into the left side of the cage. Latta's goal was her third of the season, and it was also her third career game-winner.

Nicholoff finished with six saves for Washington (6-7, 3-3 CC) while senior Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./Calverton School) needed to make only one save to post her sixth shutout of the season.

The Bullets (10-4, 4-2 CC), who improved to 7-1 at home this season, outshot the Shorewomen and held a 17-2 surplus in penalty corners.

Playing through a steady drizzle, the two sides had few scoring opportunities in the first half, when Gettysburg outshot Washington 4-1. Nicholoff saved back-to-back shots by Latta with just under 11 minutes left to snuff out the Bullets best look at a goal.

Gettysburg controlled the ball for most of the second half, when it was awarded 13 corners. However, the Bullets were unable to dent Nicholoff, who stopped senior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) on a 1-on-1 situation with just under 10 minutes to go. However, Latta cashed in a minute after Gettysburg's 16th corner of the game, and the Shorewomen were unable to get off a shot the rest of the way.

The Bullets pick up their schedule on Wednesday, when they visit McDaniel College in a Centennial Conference affair starting at 4 p.m.
