Box Score

WESTMINSTER, Md. – With matches against three top-tier teams in the Centennial Conference remaining in the regular season, the Gettysburg College women's soccer team secured an important 2-0 victory over McDaniel College on Wednesday evening. Senior Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) and freshman Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) each turned in tallies to lead the Bullets.

Gettysburg (9-4-1, 4-2-1 CC) entered Wednesday's affair seventh in the conference standings, just two points behind a three-way tie for fourth between Dickinson College, Swarthmore College, and Haverford College and three points behind third-place Ursinus College. The victory over McDaniel (3-11-1, 2-5-0 CC) temporarily moved the Bullets ahead in the standings with the remaining teams yet to play later Wednesday evening. It was a big victory considering Gettysburg's schedule includes Swarthmore, Dickinson, and first-place (tied) Muhlenberg College to close the year.

Gettysburg had little trouble with McDaniel (3-11-1, 2-5-0 CC) as the defense held the hosts to just two shots in the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) needed to stop only one of those attempts en route to her seventh shutout of the year.

Gaston put the Bullets on the board near the end of the opening half, playing a cross from sophomore Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and shooting it into the goal from the left side of the box in the 40th minute. It was Gaston's fourth goal of the year and her third in the last four matches.

Leanne Hollinger helped keep the score within reach with a match-high 11 saves for McDaniel, but Gettysburg was able to tack on an insurance goal just over 12 minutes into the second half. Senior Kerry McKenna (Sharon, Conn./Kent School) dished out her team-best third assist of the fall to Attanasio, who put in her team-leading fifth goal at 57:39.

The Bullets finished with sizeable advantages in shots (22-2) and corner kicks (14-1). Hellerman fired off eight shots, while Attanasio and Gaston posted six and five, respectively.

Gettysburg returns to the friendly confines of Clark Field for a match up with 23rd-ranked Swarthmore on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 1 p.m.
