ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. – Senior
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored 1:25 into overtime and the 16th-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team defeated Elizabethtown College 1-0 in a non-conference tilt Wednesday afternoon.
Hearn, who has scored the team's last three goals, drove to the end line and went far post for her sixth goal of the season and her third game-winner of the year.
Gettysburg (8-3) controlled a defensively-dominated game, outshooting Elizabethtown 7-1.
Senior
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./Calverton School) did not face a shot on goal but picked up her fifth shutout of the season. Liz Hannegan stopped three shots for the Blue Jays (8-3).
The first half featured only three combined shots, with the Bullets holding a 2-1 edge. Freshman
Katie Savage (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) fired a shot that was saved just three minutes in, then had an attempt sail wide with four minutes left in the half.
The Bullets pressured the Blue Jay goal early in the second half, earning two penalty corners 24 seconds apart. But Gettysburg was able to generate just one shot in the series, an attempt from senior
Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson) that was saved. The Blue Jays kept the Bullets from taking another shot until Hearn fired off three over a seven-minute span late in the half, including one following back-to-back Bullet corners. However, Hannegan saved Hearn's only shot on goal.
Gettysburg made one final push before the end of regulation, gaining three straight corners in the final minute, but did not get off a shot before the horn.
The Bullets finished with a 10-3 advantage in corners.
Gettysburg continues its season on Saturday, when it visits Bryn Mawr College in a Centennial Conference match starting at 1 p.m.
