GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman Nick DeLuca kicked a 20-yard field goal as time expired and McDaniel College spoiled Gettysburg's Senior Day, defeating the Bullets 22-20 at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium in Centennial Conference football action Saturday afternoon.

McDaniel (5-4, 3-4 CC) outgained Gettysburg (3-6, 3-4 CC) 438-330 while holding over a 20-minute (40:24-19:36) time of possession advantage.

It was the second time in four years that the Green Terror beat Gettysburg with a field goal in the closing seconds. Jay Leonard's 46-yarder with three seconds left gave McDaniel a 17-14 victory in 2006.

Senior TJ Develin rushed for 113 yards on 16 carries while sophomore Thomas Massucci threw for 225 yards and one touchdown on 28-of-44 passing for McDaniel. DeLuca finished 3-for-3 on field goals, including a season-long 40-yarder.

Senior quarterback Matt Flynn (Northfield, N.J./Mainland Regional) completed 13-of-29 passes for 192 yards and a pair of TDs while breaking or tying four conference or school records. He became the Centennial Conference career leader in total offense (now at 8,750 yards) while setting single-season school records for pass completions (now at 180) and resetting his own single-season passing yards mark (now at 2,451). In addition, he tied the Gettysburg single-season touchdown passes record of 19.

Junior receiver Brian Betley (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) caught five passes for 92 yards and two touchdowns while junior tailback Jamel Mutunga (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) carried the ball 16 times for 90 yards and a TD for Gettysburg.

Sophomore linebacker Joe Delaney (Voorhees, N.J./Mainland Regional) and freshman linebacker Wes Taylor (Silver Spring, Pa./Gonzaga) led all players with 13 tackles apiece for Gettysburg while junior linebacker Bryan DiSabato (Cedarhurst, N.Y./Lawrence) made two interceptions, the first Bullet to accomplish the feat since junior Nick Duerr (Turnersville, N.J./Washington Township) at Moravian College in 2007.

Senior linebacker Tim Widdoes (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) added 11 tackles, giving him 303 for his career, and one interception.

Senior linebacker Sam Weick and junior defensive end Sam Cox led McDaniel with nine tackles apiece.

The Green Terror took over at its own 43-yard line with 3:54 left after the Bullets had taken a 20-19 lead. Massucci then directed McDaniel on a 14-play, 54-yard drive, converting a fourth down and a third down with pass completions. His 11-yard completion to Woody Butler gave McDaniel a first-and-goal at the 5-yard line, and after a Develin 2-yard rush, the visitors called timeout with 0.7 seconds remaining, setting up DeLuca's game-winner.

DeLuca's kick came after a 10-play, 52-yard Gettysburg scoring drive that gave the Bullets their only lead of the day. Flynn was 3-for-3 on the march, hitting Betley for a 22-yard pass and junior receiver Gavin Jablonski (Allenwood, N.J./Wall) for a 13-yard pickup that gave Gettysburg a first-and-goal at the 5-yard line. Then on third down, Flynn rolled to his right before hitting Betley at the goal line with 4:00 to go. But Gettysburg's two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

DeLuca gave McDaniel a 3-0 lead with his 40-yard field goal with 8:09 left in the first quarter after Develin put the Green Terror into scoring position with a 60-yard run on the team's first play of the drive. After the two teams traded punts, McDaniel came up with a key stop on fourth-and-1 at its own 29-yard line, as the Terror tackled junior wing Charles Curcio (Hammonton, N.J./St. Joseph) for a 1-yard loss.

McDaniel then went to its bag of tricks, as Joe Lapowicz hit senior receiver Matt Cahill for a 27-yard gain on a fake punt, giving the Green Terror the ball at the Gettysburg-36. Two plays later, Massucci hit freshman CJ Billera with a 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 10-0 on the final play of the first quarter.

Gettysburg held the Green Terror to a 22-yard field goal with 6:58 left in the opening half following a 14-play, 75-yard, 7:05 McDaniel drive. But on the first play of the Bullets ensuing drive, Flynn connected with Betley for a 60-yard bomb to cut the lead to 13-7.

McDaniel answered by driving 70 yards on 14 plays, with Develin running it in from 1-yard out to put his team up 19-7 following a missed extra point. The Bullets attempted a 48-yard field goal on the final play of the half, but junior Mike Barrett's (Selinsgrove, Pa./Lewisburg) attempt was blocked by Paul Smith.

Widdoes intercepted McDaniel on the opening possession of the second half and returned it 22 yards to the Bullet-47. But Gettysburg went three-and-out, and the two teams exchanged punts twice before Mutunga broke loose for an 18-yard touchdown run – his 13th of the season – to make it a 19-14 game with 2:59 left in the third quarter.

Each team punted twice in the fourth quarter before the two final scoring drives.

Gettysburg plays its season finale next Saturday, when it visits Franklin & Marshall College at 1 p.m. in a Centennial Conference tilt.
