GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Juniors Hollis Stahl (Highstown, N.J./Peddie School) and Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) combined for 11 goals to lead fifth-ranked Gettysburg College past visiting Ursinus College 16-3 in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action at Clark Field Saturday afternoon. The victory sets up a showdown between the Bullets and third-ranked Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, April 21, with the right to host the 2009 CC Tournament on the line.
Stahl poured in six goals and dished out an assist to tie her personal best for points in a game, while Emala scored five times and added a helper. Sophomore Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) tallied two goals and two assists for a Gettysburg (13-1, 8-0 CC) offense that out-shot Ursinus (5-11, 4-5 CC) 41-11 in the contest.
The Bullets went on the offensive early, taking possession of the opening draw and working the ball around until Commins put in the first goal 1:35 into the game. Junior Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored a free position goal before the Bears found the back of the net for the first time at 24:48 as Kristen Wampole scored on a pass from Elizabeth Cannon.
Gettysburg dominated the remaining minutes of the opening half, reeling off an 8-0 run. Commins and Hearn once again started the action with goals, with Emala and Stahl each adding three goals apiece. The Bullets held the Bears to just five first-half shots and won 11-of-12 draw controls en route to a 10-1 lead at the break.
Ursinus got the ball rolling in the second half and netted the first two goals to pull to 10-3. That would be the slimmest margin of the half as the hosts netted the final six scores, including three by Stahl.
Gettysburg finished with a 16-5 advantage off the draw and held Ursinus to its lowest point total of the season. The Bullets held the Bears to just 15-of-27 on clear attempts in the contest and forced 25 turnovers.
Stahl turned in an all-around performance, adding two ground balls, two draw controls, and three caused turnovers to her offensive exploits. Junior Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Sudbury-Lincoln) dished out a pair of assists and tied sophomore Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and junior Nicole Ditillo (Baldwin, Md./Fallston) for team honors with three draw controls. Lutz added four ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers.
Junior goalie Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) made five saves against just three goals in 52:37. She also jumped out of the circle for a game-high eight ground balls and caused one turnover.
The Bullets match up with the Diplomats at the North Campus Athletic Field in Lancaster, Pa., on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. The two teams have combined for each of the last seven conference championships.
