CARLISLE, Pa. – Junior Beth McCullough (Ft. Wayne, Ind./Homestead) tossed a five-inning no-hitter in the nightcap against host Dickinson College on Wednesday evening, helping the Gettysburg College softball team to a split in its Centennial Conference doubleheader. The Bullets took the nightcap 9-0 behind McCullough's sterling performance, avenging a 2-1, 10-inning loss in the opener.

McCullough ended a personal three-game losing streak with a dominating showing on the mound, allowing only five base runners on three walks, a hit batsman, and a passed ball on a strikeout. She fanned nine hitters overall and retired the side in both the second and fourth innings. Her no-hitter was the first at Gettysburg since teammate Kristy Rubino (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany) tossed six-inning no-hitter against Juniata College on March 23, 2006.

Gettysburg (18-8, 3-3 CC) provided all the offense McCullough would need with three runs in the opening frame. Junior Sarah Woodbury (Audobon, Pa./Mt. St. Joseph Academy) doubled in a run and junior Kara Kempski (Pittsford, N.Y./Pittsford) and sophomore Caitlin Bay (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) each drew bases-loaded walks.

Woodbury tacked on another RBI in the second with a single, and came around to score on a passed ball later in the inning. The Bullets added four runs in the top of the fifth with a trio of extra-base hits, including a two-run double by Nicole Yannotta (Whippany Park, N.J./Whippany Park).

Woodbury finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two runs in the opener, while Yannotta and sophomore Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti) each went 2-for-3 with two runs.. Sophomore Casey Bialek (Glenville, Pa./South Western) also posted two hits and scored a run.

Game one turned into a pitcher's duel between Rubino and Dickinson's Liz Barry. The two lineups combined for just three base runners in the opening three and a half innings. The Red Devils appeared ready to break the game open in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs, but Rubino rebounded with three strikeouts to get out of the frame unscathed.

Gettysburg finally pushed a run across the board in the eighth as senior Erin Ober (Lutherville, Md./Dulaney) doubled with two runners aboard. Bay scampered home safely, but Lott was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Dickinson got the run back with an RBI triple by Erin King in the bottom half of the inning.

The Bullets advanced the first runner to third in both the ninth and 10th innings, but couldn't capitalize in either instance. The Red Devils finally took advantage in the bottom of the 10th as an inning-opening error allowed the runner placed on second to score the winning run.

Both pitchers allowed only six hits in the contest. Rubino (8-5) posted a dozen strikeouts and walked three, while Barry (7-3) notched four strikeouts and walked one en route to the win.

Bay posted a pair of hits and a run for the Bullets. Freshman catcher Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) reached base twice via a single and a walk.

The Bullets next take the field on Friday, April 10, with a doubleheader at Washington (Md.) College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
