GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team managed to earn a non-conference road victory at the University of Mary Washington on Saturday without the benefit of its offense scoring a goal. The Bullets earned a 1-0 decision when an Eagles' defender accidently kicked a loose ball into her own goal in the 62nd minute.
Gettysburg (2-1-0) manufactured just four shots in the contest with two stopped by Mary Washington's (3-1) goalkeeper. Both of those saves were made in the first half on attempts by sophomores
Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) and
Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's).
Bullets' sophomore goalie
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) made an early save in the second half to maintain the deadlock. Not long after, the visitors set up for a free kick just outside the box. The ball landed close to the near post and following a scramble, one of Mary Washington's defenders inadvertently knocked the ball into the goal, giving Gettysburg a 1-0 lead at 61:57.
The Eagles tested Rivera twice more in the half, but she turned away both shots en route to her first career shutout.
Mary Washington out-shot Gettysburg 7-4 and took six corners to the Bullets' one.
Gettysburg returns to action tomorrow at Mary Washington against Eastern Mennonite University. The contest is slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
