GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Kyle DeBlois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) scored two goals to lead the Gettysburg College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Ursinus College in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams Saturday evening at Clark Field.
With the win, the Bullets (3-1-2, 1-0 CC) pushed their record in Centennial Conference openers to 16-1 and remained perfect (9-0) in CC lid-lifters at home.
Ursinus (1-3-1, 0-1 CC) lost its third game in a row.
Senior
Geoff Menge (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) put Gettysburg on the scoreboard in the 22nd minute when he punched in his first goal of the season, drilling home a loose ball in front of the net. DeBlois gave the hosts a 2-0 halftime advantage when he converted in the 35th minute, blasting in a shot from 10 yards out after blocking an Ursinus clear.
Gettysburg out-shot the Bears 9-3 in the first half.
James Peeler made it a one-goal game when he took a feed from Christian Cruz and scored from the right wing in the 56th minute. However, DeBlois provided an insurance tally in the 78th minute, taking a centering cross from senior
Ryan Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) in transition and burying his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
It was the first collegiate multi-goal game for DeBlois.
The Bullets went on to outshoot Ursinus 8-3 in the second stanza to finish with a 17-6 advantage. The Bears attempted only two shots on goal, as freshman
Mike Walmer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) needed to make only one save to earn his third win of the season. Mike Alfieri stopped three shots for Ursinus.
Gettysburg held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Bullets return to action on Wednesday, when they visit Eastern University in a non-conference match starting at 4 p.m.
