GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior
Alyssa Heimbach (Palm, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) scored two goals and the 13th-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team withstood a nine-shot deficit to defeat Haverford College 3-2 in Centennial Conference action at a drenched Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The two teams, which played the entire game through heavy rain, scored all of their goals in the first half.
The Bullets (6-1, 1-1 CC) never trailed after Heimbach struck for her first goal 13 minutes into the game following a pair of quick passes from seniors
Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) and
Molly Latta (West Chester, Pa./Henderson).
Haverford (3-3, 1-1 CC) outshot the Bullets 14-5, but senior goalie
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./Calverton School) made six saves.
Mary Hobbs tied it for the Fords with just under 12 minutes left in the opening half, setting off a wild finish in which the two sides traded goals twice. Junior
Nicole Meredyth (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) put Getysburg back in front less than a minute later when she tipped in a shot off the stick of senior
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) before Alex Waleko pulled Haverford even with 9:27 on the clock.
Heimbach punched in what held up as the game-winner when she converted another pass from Latta with 2:58 remaining in the half. The tally gave Heimbach, a defender, her first collegiate two-goal game and first collegiate game-winning goal.
After outshooting the Bullets 6-2 in the first half, the Fords continued to hound the Gettysburg goal over the final 35 minutes, when it held an 8-2 shot advantage. But Anderson held up with three saves in each stanza to come away with the victory.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Tuesday, when it hosts Franklin & Marshall College at 4:30 p.m. in another Centennial Conference match-up.
