GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The Gettysburg College women's soccer team was handed its first Centennial Conference loss by a streaking squad from Haverford 2-0 on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Clark Field. Gettysburg dropped to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in conference play with the loss, while the Fords remained unbeaten on the season at 6-0-2 with their first Centennial decision.
A steady rain did its part in slowing the pace and keeping the ball on the field, but it was a long ball from the midfield that gave the match its first tally. Following a Bullet foul near the right side of the midfield, Maura Schiefer lined a ball towards the top of the box. Senior
Tara Gaston (Newtown, Conn./Newtown) had the ball skip off the top of her head right to Michele Buonora, who beat goalie
Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) to her left for the contest's first score at 14:48.
Gettysburg was primed for a scoring opportunity later in the half as sophomore
Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) put a shot towards the goal and away from the keeper, but a Ford defender was there to knock the ball away.
Haverford made several stabs at the goal early in the final period, including a one-on-none opportunity by Hannah Davis that was squashed when Rivera came diving out of the box to knock the ball back into the midfield. The pressure eventually came to fruition in the 79th minute as both Katie Van Aken and Davis fired shots on goal. Rivera knocked away both attempts, but the second carom came back out to Van Aken who punched it home for a 2-0 Haverford lead.
Visiting goalie Kayleigh Herrick-Reynolds made all three of her saves in the second half to preserve the victory.
Haverford finished with a 12-8 advantage in shots, but Gettysburg held the lead 5-1 in corner kicks.
Montague finished with a trio of shots and Gaston posted two shots for Gettysburg. Rivera tallied a pair of saves.
Gettysburg returns to the pitch for a home conference match against Franklin & Marshall College on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 7 p.m.
