GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) scored a pair of first-half goals, and the opportunistic Bullets defeated Franklin & Marshall College 2-0 in Centennial Conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Despite being outshot by a wide margin for the second game in a row, Gettysburg (7-2, 2-1 CC) found a way to come away with a win. F&M (5-3, 1-3 CC) outshot the 14th-ranked Bullets 15-2, but senior goalie
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./Calverton School) saved seven shots to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.
On Saturday, Gettysburg was outshot 14-5 in its 3-2 win over Haverford College, when Anderson made six saves.
Dating back to last season, the Bullets have now won their last nine home games, the team's longest home winning streak since a 10-gamer that overlapped the 2004 (one game) and 2005 (nine games) seasons.
Hearn put the Bullets in front 1-0 three and a half minutes into the contest, taking a pass from senior
Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) and slapping in a straightaway shot from five yards out.
The Diplomats nearly tied it up seven minutes later, when they fired off three quick shots, including one from Allison McLaren that rattled off the right post and another by Valerie Sauers that sailed just wide right.
Hearn found paydirt again with just over 15 minutes left in the opening half. Junior
Nicole Meredyth (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) sent a cross from the left that was deflected by a defender, but Hearn came up with the loose ball in front of the cage and punched it in. It was the seventh two-goal game of Hearn's career and her second of the season.
Sophomore
Megan Bernstein (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga) helped preserve the shutout just over three minutes into the second half when she made her third defensive save of the season.
F&M also held a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Saturday, when it visits No. 4 Ursinus College at noon in another Centennial Conference match-up.
