GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Katie Savage (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown) made her first collegiate goal a memorable one, scoring with 2:57 on the clock to lift the 18th-ranked Gettysburg College field hockey team to a 1-0 victory over Eastern Mennonite University in a non-conference affair and the season opener for both teams at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Gettysburg, which won its season opener for the sixth year in a row, outshot the Royals 14-8 and held a 10-4 in advantage in penalty corners.
With just over three minutes to go, the Bullets were awarded a corner, and senior
Vanessa Pabon (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) accepted a pass at the left elbow of the circle. Pabon fired the ball in front of the cage to sophomore
Sarah Cole (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr), who tipped a pass to Savage, who was waiting on the right doorstep. Savage beat the goalie to her left to give the Bullets the victory, as Gettysburg did not allow a shot the rest of the way.
Junior
Christina Anderson (Dunkirk, Md./The Calverton School) turned aside all three shots she faced to pick up her eighth career shutout for the Bullets. Junior Becky Nolt stopped eight shots for Eastern Mennonite.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Virginia Wesleyan College at 4:30 p.m. in another non-conference outing.
