Box Score

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Gallaudet University erased a two-set deficit and forced Gettysburg to go the distance for the third consecutive match with the Bison pulling off the 3-2 victory in non-conference volleyball action Tuesday night in Bream Gym.

After erasing an early deficit in the opening set to win 25-23, Gettysburg (11-12) won easily 25-18 in the second frame to take a commanding 2-0 lead over Gallaudet (16-10). The Bison jumped all over the Bullets in the third set, jumping out to a 13-point lead before settling on a 25-15 win to close the deficit.

The hosts rebounded early in the fourth set to take an 8-4, but Gallaudet came right back with a 4-0 run to tie the contest. After a kill by freshman setter Lizzy Kuhn (Wilmington, Del./Archmere Academy) put the score at 9-8 in favor of Gettysburg, the Bison put together a huge run built on the serve of Shayna Unger, reeling off each of the next 11 points. Outside hitter Mari Klassen was perfect on all six of her attack attempts, including the clinching kill in the 25-15 victory.

Coming off five-set battles with both St. Mary's (Md.) College and Johns Hopkins University, Gettysburg appeared primed to run its way to a decisive win, jumping out to a 4-1 lead on an ace by Rebecca Rubenstein (Bedford Hills, N.Y./Fox Lane) and forcing Gallaudet to call a time out. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Bison pulled ahead 8-7 and following an eight-all tie, the visitors picked up the final seven points to seal the match 15-10.

Junior Virginia Hogan (Alpharetta, Ga./Chattahoochee) led Gettysburg's attack with 11 kills and she put up 15 digs. Freshman Sarah Gorski (Darien, Conn./Darien) and senior Nicole Burns (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro) each posted eight kills. Rubenstein led the defensive effort with 22 digs and Kuhn posted five kills, 28 assists, six aces, and 15 digs.

Klassen led Gallaudet with 15 kills and 21 digs, while Ann Whited finished with 13 kills and 14 digs.

Gettysburg turns right around for another non-conference contest at Wednesday, Oct. 13, at Susquehanna University at 7 p.m.
