CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Gettysburg outshot Washington College 21-11, but the host Shorewomen downed the Bullets 3-1 in a Centennial Conference field hockey tilt Saturday afternoon.
Shannon Davis made 12 saves to lead Washington (6-7, 4-2 CC), which defeated Gettysburg for the first time since 2003.
Gettysburg (5-8, 3-3 CC) received its lone goal from senior defender
Alyssa Heimbach, who converted a penalty stroke early in the second half for her second goal of the season.
The Shorewomen were outshot 9-4 in the opening stanza but scored on half of their shots. Brittany Palasik struck eight minutes into the contest before Gussie Reilly cashed in off an assist from Emily Trees with 18:03 left in the period, giving the hosts a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Heimbach cut the deficit in half with 27:14 remaining. After the Bullets missed on three potential game-tying shots, one of which was saved by Davis, Sara Rutkowski gave Washington some breathing room when she scored off a Reilly assist with 12:23 to go.
Sophomore
Megan Feeg finished with three saves for Gettysburg, which also held a 17-5 surplus in shots.
The Bullets pick up play on Tuesday, when they host McDaniel College in another Centennial Conference affair starting at 4 p.m.
