GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Freshman
Rachel West scored off an assist from sophomore
Lindsey Lyons the 62nd minute and the Gettysburg College women's soccer team downed Ursinus College 1-0 in Centennial Conference play Saturday evening at Clark Field.
The Bullets (7-3, 3-1 CC), who have won four of their last five matches, cashed in on their only corner kick of the second half. Following the initial kick from sophomore
Suzy Englot, Lyons collected a loose ball from 10 yards out and kicked a low shot toward the goal. West then redirected the shot in front, tapping it past the keeper for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Gettysburg finished with a 12-5 advantage in shots. The Bullets outshot Ursinus 6-1 in the opening half, but none were on goal.
Junior goalie
Allie Rivera recorded a pair of saves – both of which came in the second half – for Gettysburg to come away with her second straight shutout and her third of the season. Kara DiJoseph also stopped two shots for Ursinus (5-4, 2-2 CC).
The win marked the Bullets first over Ursinus since a 2-1 victory in 2006. The two teams played to a scoreless draw last season, and the Bears claimed the previous two meetings 1-0.
Gettysburg picks up its schedule on Tuesday, when it visits Stevenson University in a non-conference game starting at 4 p.m.
