Brooks Taylor scores first collegiate goal in 2-1 loss

Brooks Taylor scored his first collegiate goal at York.

Box Score

YORK, Pa. – Freshman Brooks Taylor (Nashville, Tenn./Taft School (Conn.)) scored his first collegiate goal just over a minute into Gettysburg's match at York College, but Mike O'Connell scored twice for the hosts, including knocking in the game-winner in the 96th minute to lift the Spartans to a 2-1 victory in non-conference men's soccer action Wednesday night.

Gettysburg (4-8-1) wasted no time in jumping on the board against York (13-4), ranked 20th in the latest D3Soccer.com national poll, as Taylor accepted a pass from fellow first-year Andrew LaFontaine (Summit, N.J./Pingry) and put it home at 1:11.

With the element of surprise out of the way, York's defense shut down Gettysburg's offense, allowing only two more shots, both wide of the mark, for the remainder of the match. In the meantime, O'Connell notched the equalizer off a pass from Adam Good in the 20th minute.

The Spartans tossed eight shots at Bullets keeper Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) in the second half, but the freshman was up to the task, preserving the tie with a trio of saves. His final save of regulation came on a shot by Antonio Bua with 43 seconds left.

In the extra session, York took a pair of shots, the first by O'Connell stonewalled by Darrell. O'Connell had the last laugh, however, receiving a pass from Mike Gill and streaking to the goal for the score at 95:03.

York held a 15-3 shot advantage and also took more corner kicks than the visitors (9-2).

Gettysburg's remaining contests on the schedule all come against Centennial Conference opposition, beginning with Dickinson College this Saturday, Oct. 23, in Carlisle at 1 p.m.
