Attanasio Lifts Women’s Soccer to Double OT Win

Sophomore scores in 101st minute in 3-2 victory at Swarthmore

Casey Attanasio scored two goals in a match for the second time in her career.

Box Score

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Sophomore Casey Attanasio (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner at the start of the second overtime, to lift Gettysburg to a 3-2 victory in a key Centennial Conference women's soccer match at Swarthmore College.

Attanasio scored for the fourth consecutive match and it was her second career match with two scores, duplicating a feat she first accomplished against Bryn Mawr College last season. The victory was big for Gettysburg (11-5, 6-2 CC) as it moved into a tie for second place in the conference standings alongside Johns Hopkins University (13-3, 6-2 CC).

Swarthmore (7-6-2, 5-3 CC) doubled Gettysburg's shot count in the first half with 10 attempts, but none found the mark as Bullets keeper Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) made a pair of saves.

The match's first goal came off the foot of junior Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) who booted in her first goal of the fall on a penalty kick at 12:32.

Gettysburg added to its lead early in the second half as a red-hot Attanasio converted a pass from freshman Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) at 54:56.

Swarthmore took the wind out of the Bullets' sails with a pair of quick goals 10 minutes later. The first was fairly conventional with Kirsten Peterson hitting a shot over Rivera's head into the cage at 64:07. The second, however, was not converted by a Garnet player as a free kick by Laura Bolger was accidently headed in by a Gettysburg defender at 66:49.

Swarthmore, which out-shot the Bullets 21-10, posted a pair of shots on the cage in the latter stages of regulation. Rivera stopped both, including the last by Megan Colombo in the 83rd minute, to force overtime.

Rivera stepped up for another big save midway through the first extra session on a shot by Aly Passanante. Gettysburg did not manage a shot in the first overtime, but it wasted little time in the second, as Attanasio and West hooked up just 22 seconds in. It was Attanasio's team-leading eighth goal and West's team-leading eighth assist. The Bullet sophomore has scored five times in her last four matches, four of which have been assisted by the first-year.

Rivera made six saves en route to her 10th victory of the season.

Gettysburg's playoff push continues this week with a road trip to conference leading Dickinson College (12-2-1, 7-1 CC) on Tuesday, Oct. 26, at 4:30 p.m.
