GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior
Peter Lynch (West Chester, Pa./The Haverford School) blasted a free kick in the 19th minute to tie Albright College, but the Lions picked up a breakaway goal early in the second stanza to pull off a 2-1 victory over the Bullets in a men's soccer match up Tuesday night.
Albright (8-3) didn't waste time getting on the board, forcing a corner kick at the start of the sixth minute and putting up a pair of shots. Gibrilla Conde's first header attempt bounced off a Gettysburg (2-7-1) defender, but the carom went right to David Folino who put it home at 5:17.
The Bullets answered 13 minutes later as an Albright foul set up a free kick from about five yards outside the right corner of the box. Lynch stepped into the shot and booted a curving liner into the top left corner for his second career collegiate goal.
Freshman goalie
Connor Darrell (Cream Ridge, N.J./Allentown) posted a trio of saves over the remainder of the half to preserve the deadlock.
Gettysburg went on the attack early in the final period with six shots in the first 10 minutes. Billy Howard made a pair of saves for the Lions, while a shot by junior
Kyle Deblois (Cranbury, N.J./Princeton) clanged off the middle of the crossbar in the 54th minute.
After surviving the Bullets' flurry, Albright received the go-ahead goal from the foot of Conde at the start of the 61st minute. The ball was played ahead to the Lion freshman who sped past Gettysburg's defense and knocked a shot off Darrell into the back of the net for his seventh goal this fall.
The hosts pressed ahead in the final minutes and drew a foul to the right of the box with just over a minute remaining. The ensuing cross into the box missed any would-be scorers and the Albright defense managed to clear away the danger.
Gettysburg finished with an 18-14 shot advantage and took five corner kicks to Albright's one.
Darrell finished with four saves in the setback. Junior
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) posted five shots and freshman
Tyler Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) recorded four.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, Oct 9, with a home contest against Haverford College at 4 p.m.
