GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Liz DeMatteis scored the game-winning goal 4:14 into overtime and Elizabethtown College handed the Gettysburg College field hockey team a 1-0 setback in non-conference action Wednesday at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
Following a restart, Nadine Yunginger delivered a cross from the right side to DeMatteis, who was waiting in the center of the circle. DeMatteis one-timed the shot home as E-town (7-3) improved to 5-1 on the season in overtime games.
Gettysburg (4-5) outshot the Blue Jays 9-7 while Elizabethtown held a 9-7 edge in corners.
The Bullets had several chances to win the game at the end of regulation, taking three shots after gaining three corners inside the final 7:40. But Lindy Hamp came up with two saves during the stretch en route to her first shutout of the season.
Elizabethtown also threatened late in regulation, getting a corner with 13 seconds to go. Julie Foster put a shot on goal seconds later, but it was saved by sophomore goalie
Megan Feeg.
Hamp finished with five saves, including four in the second half, when Gettysburg outshot E-town 5-2. Feeg stopped three shots for the Bullets.
Gettysburg continues a four-game homestand on Friday, when it takes on fourth-ranked Lebanon Valley College for the final 27 minutes of a suspended game from Sept. 22. The game will be started with the Flying Dutchmen holding a 2-0 lead in the non-conference affair.
