GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Johns Hopkins University scored twice in the second half and held Gettysburg to a season-low six shots en route to a 2-0 victory in a battle of Centennial Conference frontrunners Saturday night at Clark Field.

Johns Hopkins (10-2, 4-1 CC), ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division III by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (10th) and D3soccer.com (ninth), and Gettysburg (7-5, 3-2 CC) came into Saturday night's affair tied atop the conference standings alongside Dickinson College and Swarthmore College. The Blue Jays tested the Bullets' defense early with five shots in the opening 10 minutes, but the hosts were up to the task with defenders blocking a pair of attempts and junior goalie Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) saving two.

Rivera stopped three more shot attempts before the opening half let out, and her counterpart in the Johns Hopkins goal, Meredith Maguire, managed a pair of saves on shots by freshman Rachel West (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and sophomore Lindsey Lyons (Hatfield, Pa./Pennridge). The scoreboard remained empty as the teams' went into the half.

The Centennial's highest scoring team, Johns Hopkins went to work at the start of the second half and again peppered the Gettysburg goal for a series of early shots. With just over 10 minutes gone by in the period, the Blue Jays converted the match's first goal off a free kick. Jessica Hnatiuk connected on the initial strike from over 40 yards away on the right side of the field and Erica Suter finished the play off with a header top-shelf at 55:47.

The Bullets had two good attempts at headers of their own following corner kicks within the match's next 10 minutes. Lyons missed wide at 57:40 and senior Sarah Yeager (Westport, Conn./Staples) just missed to the right of the goal at 65:41.

Johns Hopkins dictated play in the second half, but was unable to score again until a penalty shot was awarded to Christina Convey after she was taken down in the box with 56 seconds remaining. Rivera had no shot at stopping Convey's shot to the left side, though the Bullet keeper swatted away a rip by Suter as time expired.

Johns Hopkins finished with a 19-6 shot advantage and an 8-3 lead in corner kicks.

Rivera tied a season high with eight saves, while Maguire and Kristen Redsun made a combined three saves in the victory.

Gettysburg returns to the pitch at Clark Field on Thursday, Oct. 14, for a non-conference contest against York (Pa.) College at 7 p.m.
