GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Senior Beth McCullough (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) opened the day with a shutout on the mound as the Gettysburg College softball team put up 10 runs in the first inning of game one and she capped the afternoon with a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the seventh of the nightcap to complete a sweep of Muhlenberg College in Centennial Conference action at Bobby Jones Field.

Gettysburg (8-5-1, 2-0 CC) took game one 10-0 as McCullough tossed her first complete-game shutout of the season. She allowed only four hits and one walk, while striking out seven. In the nightcap, she went 2-for-3 and capped a three-run rally by the hosts with a long blast to center field to give the Bullets a 4-3 victory.

The Orange and Blue made the most of its first trip to the plate in the opener, sending 14 players to bat and getting nine hits. Freshman Joy Hallfors (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) and sophomore Megan Lott (Bellsville, Md./Pallotti) started the action with a triple and double, respectively, over the head of the center fielder. McCullough added a two-run single later in the at bat and sophomore Adrienne Rahs (Bethlehem, Pa./Saucon Valley) also plated a pair of runs with a double to center field.

Muhlenberg (4-7, 0-2 CC) put base runners on in each inning, but McCullough and the Bullet defense closed the door in each frame. McCullough improved to 3-4 with the win.

The Mules got off to a better start in game two as Ashley Brewer belted the second offering she saw from sophomore Lanie Parr (Washington, D.C./Academy of the Holy Cross) over the fence in left-center.

Both pitchers worked out of jams in the bottom of the first and top of the second. Hallfors and Lott once again reached base in their opening at bats, but Alyssa Bruckner got a double play from her defense and posted a strikeout to close the threat. The Mules loaded the bases in second, but Parr shut the door by fanning Brewer.

The Bullets tied the game in the bottom half of the second frame as junior Caitlin Bay (Flemington, N.J./Immaculata) slapped a two-out single to left-center to score sophomore Catrina DelGais (Airmont, N.Y./Suffern), who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.

It was a pitcher's duel for the next three innings as the bats combined for only three hits. In the top of the sixth, Muhlenberg regained the lead as Jess Kasza and Shelby Smith posted back-to-back run-scoring base knocks to put the visitors up 3-1.

The Bullets tried to answer in the bottom half of the frame, loading the bases with one out, but Bruckner induced Bay and Hallfors into pop-ups.

After Muhlenberg stranded a runner on third in the seventh, Gettysburg put on the rally caps. Lott and Rahs posted back-to-back singles to open, and Sarah Woodbury (Audubon, Pa./Mount de Sales Academy) followed with a double down the right-field line to score Lott. DelGais laced a grounder just past the reach of the third baseman to score the game-tying run. Still with no outs on the board, McCullough stepped to the dish and belted a shot to the warning track in center field to score Woodbury for the game-winner.

Parr improved to 4-1 this spring with the win. She allowed three runs on six hits and three walks, while striking out five.

Eight players managed two hits in the doubleheader for the Orange and Blue, led by Hallfors who finished 5-for-7 with two runs. Lott went 4-for-7 with two runs and two RBI and McCullough finished 3-for-6 with three RBI.

Smith, Kasza, Brewer, and Devon Barber all finished with two hits for Muhlenberg.

Gettysburg will hit the road for its next affair, a non-conference doubleheader at Lebanon Valley College on Wednesday, March 24, at 3 p.m.
