COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's tennis team tacked on a pair of weekend wins to extend its winning streak to three. The Bullets beat Messiah College 7-0 in a non-conference affair on Friday, before capping a perfect week with a 9-0 victory over Ursinus College in Centennial Conference action Saturday.
On Friday, Gettysburg (9-6, 3-4 CC) and Messiah (4-10) managed to play most of the matches before thunderstorms halted play with No. 1 and No. 2 singles unfinished. The Bullets had the match well in hand at that point, beginning with a sweep in doubles. The top tandem of sophomores
Terry Keegan(Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) and
Sebastian Rodriguez (Plano, Texas/Plano West) posted a 9-7 decision, while the No. 2 team of sophomore
Mike McLaughlin (Hanover, Pa./South Western) and freshman
Chris Curran (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and the No. 3 squad of seniors
Dale Beshore (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East) and
Kevin Raynes (Northumberland, Pa./Shikellamy) combined to drop only one game in a pair of easy wins.
Raynes blanked his opponent at No. 6 (6-0, 6-0) and McLaughlin nearly did the same at the fourth flight, allowing just one point in a 6-1, 6-0 decision. Keegan (No. 3) and Rodriguez (No. 5) each posted wins by 6-1, 6-2 scores.
Returning to conference competition against Ursinus (7-10, 0-7 CC), Gettysburg again opened with a sweep in doubles as Keegan and Rodriguez (No. 1, 9-7) and Curran and McLaughlin (No. 2, 8-0) each put up the same scores as their doubles wins against Messiah. Raynes paired with junior
Will Brinks (Havertown, Pa./Episcopal Academy) for the first time and posted an 8-4 win at the third flight.
Each singles contest was decided in straight-sets with Keegan putting up the double-bagel (6-0, 6-0) on Chris Wyshock at No. 2. Curran and McLaughlin each improved to 11-6 this season with 6-1, 6-1 wins at first and third singles, respectively.
Rodriguez earned his team-best 12th singles victory and fifth consecutive with a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win at No. 4. Raynes put up a 6-3, 6-0 win at five and Brinks earned his first conference dual win 6-1, 6-3 at six.
