ELVERSON, Pa. – Freshman
Austin Smith finished in a three-way tie for seventh among 34 golfers, leading the Gettysburg College men's golf team to a fourth-place finish on Day Two of the Centennial Conference Championship at Stonewall Golf Course on Sunday.
After shooting a season-best 305 on the first day, the Bullets were tied with Franklin & Marshall College for first place. But they slipped to third after carding a 323 on the middle 18 holes before dropping another spot following a 315 in the final round, finishing with a score of 943.
F&M won their second straight conference title, shooting a 910 (305-301-304). McDaniel College placed second with a 921 (312-309-300) while Muhlenberg College came in third with a 941 (316-315-310). McDaniel's Paul Kovalcheck claimed medalist honors with a 224 (76-77-71), beating F&M's Cameron Warner on three playoff holes.
Smith finished with a 54-hole score of 230 (74-78-78), missing all-conference honors by one stroke. Junior
Peter Ruymann was six strokes back, tying for 13th with a 236 (80-78-78).
Also figuring into the team scoring were senior
Reid Sessa, who tied for 16th with a 237 (76-81-80), and junior
Peter Kratsios, who tied for 24th with a 246 (77-90-79). Sophomore
George Whitelaw also competed and placed 28th with a 251 (78-86-87).
The championship marked the final match of the season for the Bullets.
