CC Women's Lax Tournament Preview

The 2010 Centennial Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament features the three-time defending champ, two former champs looking for a return to glory, one perennial playoff team looking to finally break through, and a fresh new face.

It's the same old hat for Gettysburg and Franklin & Marshall, each of whom are in the tournament for the 10th consecutive season. The Diplomats are the three-time defending champs, but the Bullets have brought the tournament back to the Burg where they are 6-0 all-time. Gettysburg last won the title in 2006, capping a five-year run atop the podium.

After a two-year hiatus Ursinus returns to the postseason as the No. 3 seed. The three-time champions more than doubled their win total from last spring with three of their five losses coming at the hands of nationally-ranked foes.

Haverford is the newest entrant into the postseason, claiming the four seed. The Fords only losses came in conference play, including three by a combined four goals.

Dickinson rounds out the tournament field as the fifth seed. The Red Devils have played in the previous five conference playoffs, but failed to pick up a victory until beating down McDaniel in last season's opening round.

The following is a brief capsule on each team:

#1 Gettysburg College Bullets

Overall: 15-2
Centennial Conference: 9-0
CC Tournament Appearances: 10
CC Tournament Record: 14-4
CC Titles: 6 (2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006)

Gettysburg will try to take advantage of playing on the friendly confines of Clark Field and claim its league-best seventh conference title. This is the fourth time the Bullets have hosted the CC Championship with conference crowns in each of the first three instances. The squad gets the job on both ends of the field, pacing the conference in scoring offense (15.65 goals per game) and ranking second in scoring defense (6.76 GAA). Ten Bullets have tossed in at least 10 goals this spring, with seniors Nina Emala and Hollis Stahl posting 50 and 45, respectively. Stahl, last year's CC Player of the Year, is having another banner season with team-leading totals for ground balls (39) and draw controls (43). Senior midfielder Jessica Crane has churned up a career-high 30 goals and leads the CC with 35 caused turnovers. On the other side of the field, Gettysburg's ninth-ranked defensive unit is anchored by junior Becky Lutz who ranks second on the team in ground balls (38), draw controls (41), and caused turnovers (23). Senior goalie Kristen Krammer is having her best season statistically in the cage with a 7.34 goals against average and .505 save percentage.

#2 Franklin & Marshall College

Overall: 12-3
Centennial Conference: 8-1
CC Tournament Appearances: 10
CC Tournament Record: 10-6
CC Titles: 3 (2007, 2008, 2009)

The defending national champions and three-time defending conference champions face a new challenge with the conference tournament away from its home turf. Franklin & Marshall is the only Centennial team to beat Gettysburg on Clark Field since 2005, pulling out a 10-8 victory in 2008. The Dips were running strong until the final week of the season when it dropped back-to-back decisions to Gettysburg (8-7) and TCNJ (11-7) before edging upstart Haverford 10-8 to end the year. The conference leader in goals against average (6.53), F&M has allowed only two opponents to eclipse 10 goals this spring. Senior goalie Lidia Sanza is the top goalie in the CC with a 6.82 GAA and .518 save percentage, in addition to a team-best 30 ground balls. The offense is paced by all-time leading scorer Blake Hargest who has poured in a conference-best 74 points on 41 goals and 33 assists. Junior Meredith Lussier paces the team with 45 goals, while Sarah Veneski has dished out 24 assists.

#3
Ursinus College

Overall: 11-5
Centennial Conference: 6-3
CC Tournament Appearances: 8
CC Tournament Record: 4-7
CC Titles: 3 (1996, 1999, 2001)

After missing the postseason in each of the last two seasons, Ursinus has designs on reclaiming its status as a top contender in the CC. The Bears last claimed the conference crown in 2001, but the team has won only one contest in the CC Tournament since that title. Ursinus established itself as a contender early by defeating four teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Sophomore Emily Diehl and junior Lindsey Urban form a 1-2 punch on offense with Diehl posting 30 goals and 10 assists and Urban tossing in 34 goals. Senior Elizabeth Cannon has 35 points to her credit, while junior Allison Furman has posted team-leading totals for assists (16) and ground balls (36). Defensively, a pair of seniors lead the way with defender Cindy Taylor putting up a team-high 21 caused turnovers and goalie Alex McBride posting a 9.61 goals against average.

The Fords use a rotating system at goalie where Siobhan Neitzel and Leah Hammerschlag have combined for a 6.97 GAA and .521 save percentage.

#5 Dickinson College

Overall: 9-5

The Red Devils posted their first win in postseason play last spring with a 19-11 win over McDaniel in the first-round game, before being ousted by Gettysburg for the third year in a row in the semifinals. After dropping four of five contests, Dickinson closed the regular season with wins in its final three contests. The team ranks second in the CC in draw controls at 13.64 per game with senior Alysa Crellin pacing the league at 4.5 per outing.
