GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Brittany Baer almost single-handedly kept McDaniel College in the game with six goals and two assists, but seventh-ranked Gettysburg College received goals from 10 different players to pick up a 16-12 victory and maintain its perfect mark in the Centennial Conference.
Gettysburg (10-2, 4-0 CC) kept pace with Franklin & Marshall College atop the conference standings, while damaging McDaniel's (7-4, 1-3 CC) playoff hopes. The Bullets' well-balanced scoring effort was paced by senior
Jessica Crane (Sudbury, Mass./Sudbury-Lincoln) who posted three goals, one assist, four ground balls, and four caused turnovers. Junior
Marnie Commins (Fairfax Station, Va./Robinson) added two goals and two helpers for the hosts.
The Orange and Blue established its dominance early with the first six goals of the game, including two by Crane. Baer and Brittany Lines helped McDaniel cut the margin by combining for four of the next five goals, pulling the Green Terror to 7-4 at 10:36.
The Bullets tacked on the next three goals, including back-to-back tallies by senior
Hollis Stahl (Hightstown, N.J./Peddie School), before another score by Baer set the halftime margin at 10-5.
The second period was anything but clean as the two teams combined for 37 turnovers and nine failed clear attempts. Gettysburg opened with the first two goals as Commins converted a turn-around shot at 26:46 and freshman
Katie Levy (Baltimore, Md./Friends School) added a free position goal at 21:46. The teams rotated goals over the next 20 minute to maintain the seven-goal difference until a late-game run by the Terror pulled the deficit to four by the end of the contest.
Gettysburg finished with an advantage in shots (33-29) and ground balls (29-22), while forcing McDaniel into a season-high 35 turnovers. The Green Terror owned action off the draw, however, winning 20 of 30 attempts. Gettysburg was one off its season high with 19 caused turnovers.
Baer posted more than half of the visitor's shot attempts with 15 and posted five draw controls and two caused turnovers. She is just two goals shy of tying the school's all-time mark for goals. Lines added three goals, while Sarah Mintz posted a pair of scores and dished out four assists.
All but one Bullet that took a shot ended up scoring a goal in the game. Stahl and senior
Nina Emala (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) both posted two goals and one assist. With three points, Stahl moved into a tie for seventh on Gettysburg's career scoring list with 192. Senior
Lexie Hearn (Old Greenwich, Conn./Greenwich) also tallied a pair of goals. Junior
Becky Lutz (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) posted five ground balls, four draw controls, and three caused turnovers.
Senior keeper
Kristen Krammer (Woodbine, Md./Glenelg) picked up the victory to move one shy of the school's all-time mark for goalkeeper victories held by Liz Borucki '04 at 51. Krammer made eight saves, but her counterpart in the McDaniel goal, Leanne Hollinger, was even better with 14 stops.
Gettysburg returns to action with a road trip to Haverford College (10-1, 3-1 CC) on Saturday, April 10, at 3 p.m.
