OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Freshman
Tyler Shaffer (Biglerville, Pa./Biglerville) recorded his first collegiate goal, but it wasn't enough to take down unbeaten Stevenson University as the Mustangs improved to 5-0 with a 3-1 victory Saturday afternoon.
Gettysburg (1-3-0) out-shot Stevenson (5-0-0), ranked ninth in the Atlantic South Region, 9-6 in the contest with junior
Eric Hynes (Far Hills, N.J./Pingry School) taking two attempts in the opening 20 minutes. Stevenson goalkeeper Ryan Flannelly posted the first of his two first-half saves on Hynes' second shot at 18:08.
The Mustangs notched the first goal six minutes later when John Adamo's corner kick caromed off a defender in the box and right into the goal. Sophomore
Mike Walmer (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) prevented a two-goal deficit in the opening half by stopping a shot by Ansger Otto in the 31st minute.
A two-goal advantage was put into effect at the start of the final period as Otto scored his team-leading eighth goal of the year at 49:06. Shaffer answered 10 minutes later on a loose ball in front of the keeper to slice the margin to 2-1.
Otto factored into the insurance goal in the 71st minute, lacing a ball into the box off a direct kick where it was tapped home by Chris Sokolis. Flannelly stopped Gettysburg's final stab at the goal by freshman
Brian Sugarman (Middletown, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) with just over four minutes to play.
Next up for the Bullets is the team's home opener at Clark Field against No. 17 Messiah College on Wednesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m.
