GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Mary Swarthout scored the game's only goal 5:35 into the second half and Catholic University remained undefeated and unscored upon, defeating Gettysburg 1-0 in non-conference field hockey action Tuesday afternoon on a gorgeous day at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
After the Cardinals (5-0) were awarded a penalty corner, Caroline Reilly accepted the ball at the top of the circle before ripping a low shot that was tipped over the goalie by Swarthout for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Catholic, which snapped a three-game losing streak to Gettysburg (2-2), outshot the Bullets 18-3. However, sophomore goalie
Megan Feeg turned in an outstanding performance for Gettysburg, making a career-high 11 saves, the most by a Bullet since
Christina Anderson '10 had 13 in a loss to Ursinus College on Oct. 3 of last season.
The Cardinals held an 8-1 shot advantage in the first half, but that's when Feeg, who made several diving stops throughout the day, made seven of her stops.
Just over two minutes after Swarthout's goal, the Bullets had a chance to tie it, but Krystyanna Ramsdell turned aside a shot from junior
Sarah Cole, and it would turn out to be Gettysburg's final shot of the day.
Ramsdell finished with three saves to record her fifth straight shutout to open the season.
Gettysburg plays its Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, when it hosts 20th-ranked Johns Hopkins University at 10 a.m.
