GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Sara Montague (Newark, Del./St. Mark's) headed in a corner kick in the 87th minute to lift Gettysburg to a 1-0 victory over visiting Catholic University in non-conference women's soccer action at Clark Field Wednesday night.

Gettysburg (4-2-0) avoided a three-match losing streak with the victory, in addition to picking up its first shutout win of the 2010 campaign. Catholic dropped to 3-2 on the year.

Wednesday's action started off fast and furious as the Cardinals came out with three shots following a corner kick several minutes in. The first two were blocked away with the third sailing over the Bullets goal.

Montague was the first player from either team to put a shot on goal, attempting a back-tap following a free kick by junior Lauren Johnson (Morristown, N.J./Morristown-Beard) in the 27th minute and then blasting a one-timer just outside the box in the 35th minute. Both attempts were halted by Catholic goalie Amanda Cowan.

Junior goalie Allie Rivera (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham Wading River) kept pace with her Cardinal counterpart, rushing a shot by Kelly Donnelly in the 37th minute and knocking the attempt away from the goal.

The even match up continued throughout the second period until late in the 86th minute when a cross by Gettysburg's Colleen Looney (Virginia Beach, Va./Bishop Sullivan Catholic) found its way into the box. Junior Sam Hellerman (Smithtown, N.Y./Smithtown West) eventually put a foot on the ball, which ricocheted off a defender and out-of-bounds for a corner kick.

Johnson took the corner and placed the ball perfectly in front of the cage where Montague lifted into the air and knocked it in at 86:26. The goal and assist were the first points of the year for both players.

Catholic finished with a 12-9 edge in shots, but Gettysburg led the way in corner kicks 8-2.

The Bullets begin Centennial Conference play against Bryn Mawr College at Clark Field on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1 p.m.
