GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Windy conditions made it a struggle to get the ball anywhere near the goal in Saturday's men's soccer match up between Gettysburg and Haverford, but the visiting Fords managed to sneak one shot home to pick up a 1-0 decision in Centennial Conference play.
With the wind gusting upwards of 30 miles per hour by game time, Gettysburg (6-5-1, 3-2-1 CC) and Haverford (6-6-1, 2-4 CC) took turns trying to put the ball close the goal in the opening period. The Fords posted four shots with sophomore goalie
Connor Darrell stopping both looks on goal. The Bullets managed three corner kicks and a pair of shot attempts, but failed to put anything on goal.
In the second half, senior
Teddy McCarthy took a stab at the goal with a low shot from just outside the 18 in the 56th minute. Haverford goalie Nick Kahn prevented any damage by scooping up the ball. Kahn also caught a long kick by junior
Dan McNamara that was arcing toward the goal in the 63rd minute.
Following the host's final shot, Haverford ran off four consecutive shots with Darrell putting a halt to Matt Johnson's attempt in the 71st minute. The Fords struck shortly after as Steve Griffith pushed the ball to the left side of the box and David Restrepo finished to the right side of the net at 72:59.
Haverford held Gettysburg without a shot the rest of the way to earn the victory.
The Fords out-shot the Bullets 11-4, while the hosts led in corner kicks 4-3.
