GETTYSBURG, Pa. – York (Pa.) College followed up an hour-long lightning delay by scoring at the start of the 21st minute to edge Gettysburg College 1-0 in a non-conference men's soccer tilt at Clark Field Wednesday night.
Thunderstorms chased both Gettysburg (6-6-1) and York (6-5-4) indoors in the middle of warm ups and pushed the start time to 8:15 p.m. When the match finally got underway, the Bullets looked to be the aggressor early with a pair of shots, including one on goal by sophomore
Brian Sugarman in the 17th minute.
York set up the only score of the match just before the 20-minute mark. A cross from the left side found its way to Antonio Bua who headed it toward the goal. Sophomore
Connor Darrell made a diving stop, but the ball bounced right back to Bua who went top shelf for the tally.
The Spartans held an 8-3 lead in shots in the opening half, but Darrell prevented any further damage with a save in the 41st minute.
Gettysburg and York exchanged a pair of scoring opportunities 15 minutes into the final period. Making his first career start, freshman
Christian Pyros blasted an attempt from nearly 30 yards out that forced Ethan Kavanagh to make a diving save inside the left post. The Spartans came right back a minute later as Bua fielded a pass out of the backfield and beat the Gettysburg defenders to the goal. Darrell raced out and stopped Bua's attempt just inside in the 18.
Senior
Kyle DeBlois appeared to have an open look at the goal after getting behind the defense in the 69th minute, but Kavanagh managed to get a hand on the shot to push it away from the goal.
Gettysburg forced a corner kick in the 89th minute and Pyros put another shot on goal that Kavanagh was able to corral.
York out-shot the hosts 17-8 and corner kicks were even at three apiece.
Darrell finished with four saves for the hosts, while Kavanagh posted five for York.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 22, with a home contest against Muhlenberg College at 7 p.m.
