SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Gettysburg College men's soccer team was handed its first Centennial Conference loss of the season as 11th-ranked Swarthmore College handed the Bullets a 2-0 decision Sunday afternoon.
Gettysburg (6-4-1, 3-1-1 CC) saw its six-match unbeaten streak come to a halt, while Swarthmore (9-2, 4-1 CC), ranked 11th by D3soccer.com, notched its fourth-straight win.
The Bullets managed their only shot on goal early in the first period as junior
Thomas Siekmann was stopped by Garnet goalie David D'Annunzio in the eighth minute.
Swarthmore fired right back, forcing Gettysburg keeper
Connor Darrell to make four saves over the next 20 minutes. Unfortunately for the visitors, Darrell's last save led to the first goal of the game as John Pontillo finished off the rebound at 29:05.
The hosts tacked on an insurance goal as McWelling Todman followed up a free kick with a score 42 minutes into the match.
Darrell, who finished with eight saves in the contest, and the Bullets' defense kept Swarthmore off the board in the second half, but Gettysburg failed to find the touch offensively. Despite setting up seven corner kicks, the visitors managed just two shots in the final period.
Swarthmore out-shot Gettysburg 17-5, but the visitors had the advantage in corner kicks 9-5.
Gettysburg returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 15, with a home match against Haverford College at 1 p.m.
