Box Score
GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Becca Kent scored the golden goal in the 97th minute to lift Gettysburg to a 3-2 win over visiting Swarthmore College in Centennial Conference women's soccer action at Clark Field Sunday afternoon.
Gettysburg (6-5, 4-1 CC) put an end to a three-match losing streak and defeated Swarthmore (7-5, 3-3 CC) for the second consecutive season in extra time. Current junior
Casey Attanasio scored in the 101st minute in a 3-2 decision over the Garnet last fall.
A tightly contested battle throughout, Sunday's match up saw the Bullets strike for the first two goals early in the final period. Sophomore
Meg Castranova tallied the first as her corner kick from the right side found its way into the back of the net just over a minute into the final period of regulation.
In the 54th minute, sophomore
Tobi Goss found Attanasio cutting to the goal with the junior making a nice sliding kick to beat Swarthmore keeper Marie Mutryn at 53:19.
Copying the script from last fall's contest, the Garnet turned in each of the next two scores to tie the match. Aly Passanante notched the first with a blast from 20 yards out at 66:05. Then in the 80th minute, the visitors took advantage of a foul in the box as Ellen Bachmanhuff stroked the ensuing penalty kick for the equalizer.
Gettysburg appeared to tie the match with just minutes left in regulation. After forcing a corner kick that found its way to the other side of the pitch, the Bullets chipped the ball back into the box. Attanasio got her foot on the ball close to the far post and flipped it into the other corner in the 88th minute. The score was waved off, however, as Kent was called offside in front of the net.
Overtime started on a physical note with nothing but fouls and yellow cards until the Bullets pressed ahead in the 97th minute. Kent received a pass out of the midfield and managed to push the ball through the only defender between her and the goal. After racing several yards down the left side, she shot the ball past Mutryn into the net.
Kent's final tally gave Gettysburg an 11-10 edge in shots. The Bullets also led in corner kicks 4-1.
Senior
Allie Rivera posted five saves in the victory. Mutryn notched a pair of stops.
Gettysburg returns to action with a non-conference affair at York (Pa.) College on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 4 p.m.
