BALTIMORE - Freshman
Molly Phillips scored in the 21st minute to help Gettysburg down Swarthmore College 1-0 in the semifinals of the Centennial Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Saturday night at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University.
Gettysburg (12-6) advances to the CC title match for the first time since winning it all in 2004. The Bullets will face fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins University (18-0), which defeated Haverford College 3-0 in the other tournament semifinal, in Sunday's finale at 3 p.m. on Homewood Field.
Swarthmore out-shot Gettysburg 11-7, but the Garnet found no way around the Bullet defense and senior goalie
Allie Rivera. Rivera posted two of her three saves in the opening 13 minutes,
Phillips notched her sixth goal of her debut campaign just after the 20-minute mark as fellow first-year
Meg Castranova laced a corner kick to the far post and Phillips tapped it in. The assist was Castranova's fourth of the campaign.
That was all the offense to be had though Gettysburg put four more shots on goal, including back-to-back attempts by juniors
Casey Attanasio and
Mackenzie Cobb in the 58th minute. Swarthmore Marie Mutryn stopped all four attempts to keep the one-goal deficit.
The Garnet's last stab at tying the match came in the 75th minute, but Rivera halted the shot on goal by Emily Coleman. The Gettysburg backfield led by Castranova, Phillips, and seniors
Sam Hellerman and
Lauren Johnson held Swarthmore without a shot over the final 15 minutes.
Gettysburg will be vying for its sixth Centennial title and the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Bullets will be aiming to end Johns Hopkins' six-year reign at the top of the conference podium.
